This past week I went to San Saba to run some errands and pick up some grocery items at Super S grocery for my wife. At the check out stand I was asked for my drivers license. Being 67 years old I was taken back at the idea of being ID'd for a 6 pack of beer. Being a policeman for over 20 years, I am fairly familiar with checking ID's, plus I have not been asked for an ID at a grocery store EVER, this seemed a little extreme. The clerk then said something about TABC rules. I was still unsure about what was happening, so I asked why she wanted to check my drivers license. She said she did not want to look at my drivers license, she needed to SWIPE my license through the card reader there at the register. I then understood. The card reader is connected to the store computer which will then store my full drivers file info. It appears that Super S is mining and gathering info, then will probably sell my complete bio to different marketing companies. "Beware"Sincerely,Al FenterCherokee, Texas

Dear Editor:I want to take a moment to thank all those who made the Forum this last week such a huge success. The Texas ArgiLife Extension Service, the Extension Education Council and the FCS Committee all joined forces to make this program possible. I believe that they did an excellent job serving our county with a forum for both of us to speak at.A lot of hard work went into and setting this up and I can't thank everyone personally but all of your hard work and dedication to our county is greatly appreciated.Thank you,Sheriff Allen BrownSan Saba, TX

Dear Editor:When I was 24, I went to a Teacher Retirement System's seminar about the benefits they offered. I thought if I continued to work in Education I would have retirement benefits when that time came. I would have an annuity that would help me make ends meet for the rest of my life. (This is known as a defined benefit plan.)I had enough years of service to retire in 2008 after 31 years. The retirement checks began. My wife also left her job in 2008 and that year her 401K lost $40,000. Her funds contained no guarantees for funding for the rest of her life.Teachers should want their retirement in something they can count on. There is an attack on our defined benefit plan. These are those that want to take away the assurance that the funds we put in and the matching amount the state puts in will amount to a guarantee income for life. The plan we have now works, we don't need to change it.If you are in TRS as an active school personnel or retired school personnel, please come to our Texas Retired Teachers Association and TRS presentation on Thursday, March 8th at 4:30 p.m. in the San Saba Elementary School Cafeteria at 800 W. Storey St. This is for all of San Saba County. As the watchdog for our pension fund, TRTA keeps you up-to-date on the latest retirement news in Texas and around the nation. Please attend. Thank you.Sincerely,James JohnstonSan Saba, TX
