Carl Gray (Pete) Hamrick, Jr., of Belton, Texas, (formerly of San Saba, Texas) passed away on Monday, February 20, 2012, in Park Place Manor, Belton, Texas. Mr. Hamrick was born in San Saba on October 25, 1925, to Carl Gray Hamrick, Sr. and Maude Florence Bowers Hamrick. Pete spent his childhood in San Saba County and joined the Navy during World War II when he turned 18. He served in the Pacific Theater on the USS Mindanao. After returning to San Saba from the service he married Natalie Gage of San Saba. They celebrated their 63 wedding anniversary October 28, 2011. They have three children; Stephen Hamrick of Fort Worth, Susan and Steve Slaughter of Belton, and Annie and Bret McCall of Belton.Pete worked his entire life as a stock farmer, growing peanuts, wheat, hay, and maize and raising sheep and cattle all around San Saba County. Pete was known at all of the area auctions and knew cattle well. His favorite past time was gardening and growing some of the best vegetables in San Saba County!Mr. Hamrick dearly loved his children and grandchildren and never passed up any opportunity to brag about them. He loved going to his lake house at Lake Belton, and barbecuing and watching his grandchildren have fun on the lake.After Pete had a severe stoke 15 years ago, he slowed down a bit, although some of the employees at the nursing home said he was “hell on wheels”! He and his wife moved to Belton 8 years ago to be near their daughters.Pete is survived by his wife and two daughters of Belton; his son of Fort Worth; his grandchildren, Cody Hamrick of Fort Worth; Stephanie and Tim Hohertz of Stephenville; Shannon Slaughter and Matthew McCall of Belton; two brothers, Ray and Betty Hamrick and Trenton and Patsy Hamrick of San Saba; sisters-in-law, Corky Grimes of San Saba; and Betty Phillips of Masterson; and numerous nieces and nephews.Pete was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and several nieces and nephews.Visitation was held on Thursday, February 23, 2012, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home, San Saba. Services were held at the graveside on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Chappel Cemetery in San Saba County. Services were under the direction of Heritage Funeral Homes. Memorials may be left to a charity of choice.
