Pierian Study Club Holds Valentine Meeting

On February 9, 2012, the Pierian Study Club met at the home of Cherry Kay Lange. Co-hostesses for the meeting were Ann Allison, Ella Burton-Pavich, Anita Miles and Barbara Gilger, Committee Chair. Other members present were Connie Adams, Bebe Bagley, Brooke Bagley, Paula Barrier, Loy Nell Behrens, Gail Bruner, Millie Burnham, Sharon Clawson, Kathleen Hawkins, Jeri Jones, Ann McElroy, Joycelyn McRorey, Martine Miller, Jane Randolph, Clione Rochat, Debbie Shahan, Vickie Stevenson, Geanne Taylor, Patricia Warren, Rebecca Whitley, Louise Williams, Anna Wilson, and Martha Roe Terry.As Mrs. Lange welcomed guests to her home, co-hostesses served dessert parfaits featuring Crème de Pirouline cookies and layers of whipped crème topped with a fresh strawberry and garnished with an aromatic cinnamon stick. Texas Pecan, a flavored coffee, and iced water were also served. Valentine appointments and a fresh arrangement of Cyclamen adorned the hostess table.Kathleen Hawkins, President, called the meeting to order. Loy Nell Behrens then led members in the Club Collect. Anita Miles, in honor of Valentine’s Day, introduced the program, Love is in the Air featuring Shelia Meador, soloist and Children’s Coordinator for the First Baptist Church of San Saba. Mrs. Meador opened her a‘cappella program with several music theater selections. She sang both the title song and My Favorite Things from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s, The Sound of Music, followed by a performance of Burt Bacharach’s hit, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again from Promises, Promises, and then concluded with Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man Of Mine and It’s Only Make Believe from Kern and Hammerstein’s, Showboat. Then Mrs. Meador showcased her operatic training in a moving rendition of Summertime from Gershwin’s, Porgy and Bess. Mrs. Meador then closed her program by performing two of her personal hymn favorites, Great Is Thy Faithfulness and Amazing Grace. After receiving a standing ovation for her exceptional performance, Clione Rochat presented Mrs. Meador a gift basket of candied pecans on behalf of the club’s membership.Mrs. Hawkins continued with the business section of the meeting by calling on Rebecca Whitley, in lieu of the absent Sandy Smith, club secretary, for roll call and the reading of the minutes. The minutes for the January meeting were approved as read.Louise Williams, Treasurer, gave the monthly financial report. Patricia Warren, Membership Chair, reported due to the retirement announcement and planned move of Debby Lake, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of San Saba, that her name had been removed from the club’s waiting list. Hilary Adams, nominee and daughter-in-law of member, Connie Adams, was then nominated and by acclamation accepted as a member and placed on the official club waiting list pending an opening in active membership. Mrs. Warren also reminded members that Nicole Bagley is first on the member list. On behalf of the absent Kay Nettleship, Projects Chair, President Hawkins announced that members’ donations of toiletries and other necessities for the Dove Project would be collected at the close of the meeting. Clione Rochat, Gifts-Cards-Flowers Chair, stated that her committee would send the appropriate cards expressing sympathy on behalf of the loss of a nephew to the family of Sandy Smith and a get well card to ailing member, Elsie Millican.With no other club reports to be made, or any unfinished business or new business to attend to, the meeting was adjourned. In closing, Mrs. Hawkins thanked Mrs. Lange along with her co-hostesses for their time and preparations. Mrs. Miles, Yearbook Chair, then announced that the next meeting of the Pierian Study Club will be held on March 8th beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the San Saba High School Cafetorium for the annual presentation of the UIL One-Act Play. Hostesses for the meeting will be Sandy Kuykendall, Gail Bruner, Millie Burnham, Paula Barrier and Sandy Smith, Committee Chair.
