It is time again for school board elections. Each year in May, San Saba ISD holds joint elections with the City of San Saba. The election date is Saturday, May 12, 2012. Key dates to remember regarding this election include: 2/4/2012 is the first day to file for a place on the ballot (pick up an application to run for school board); 3/5/2012 is the last day to file for a place on the ballot and deadline for declaration of write-in candidacy; 4/30/2012 if the first day to early vote in person; 5/8/2012 is the final date to vote early in person; 5/12/2012 is Election Day! Early voting and voting on Election Day is held at the City Council Chambers located at the San Saba City Hall (303 South Clear Street). What are the duties of school board members? According to the SSISD policy handbook posted online at www.san-saba.net, board members set policy for the district that guides the district in reaching their goals. The board sets comprehensive goals, performance goals, sets a tax rate and constructs a budget. Other duties include reviewing an annual audit, ensuring that the superintendent is operating and conducting school business appropriately, they conduct elections, may acquire property, select a bank depository when it is time, adopt policy regarding personnel, make decisions relating to the termination of employment, hear grievances, collect taxes, bequests, pursue eminent domain and collaborate with the superintendent to help make the district as successful as it possible can be. School board members meet in regular session one time each month, which is set on the second Monday at 6:00 pm. As well, it is necessary from time-to-time to hold a special meeting to work on budgets, attend and receive training or to work on goal setting. School board members are elected at-large to three-year terms. This election three trustee positions will be open. Trustee Positions open are currently held by Kim Kirk, Marcie Maxcey and Michael Deans. Applications to file for a place on the ballot may be picked up at the San Saba ISD Central Administration Office at 808 West Wallace. The current school board is comprised of Kim Kirk, president; Marcie Maxcey, vice-president; Kevin Shahan, secretary; Michael Deans, Misty Everett, Angela Johnson, and Susie Nettleship. Please don’t forget that Friday, February 17, 2012 is an early release day for students; buses will run at 12:30 pm. Monday, February 20 is an OFYP day for SSHS and SSMS. Parents please contact the campus where your child attends school if you do not know if your child has to attend OFYP or not.
