Hardpan

Farmers know what this means because it is a farmers nightmare. It is when a layer of dirt compacts below surface of the topsoil and becomes very hard. It can be several inches to several feet below the surface and it stops or severely limits crop production on farmland and you have to get big tractors and special plows to break it up if you want to cure it. Hardpans remind me of something in the Bible. Our heart not the physical but our spiritual heart is very important and what we think or have in them is critical to our relationship to God. Not what we say but what is on the inside or underneath is what counts, (Matthew 15:8). Our hearts can become dull to the things of God and even defile us, (Matthew 13:15, 15:18&19). Pride, unbelief, arrogance, greed, limited understanding to spiritual things and resisting God are just a few symptoms of a hardened heart, (Mark 8:17&18, 16:14, Luke 1:51). A hardened heart grieves Jesus, and God may even withdraw His hand of blessing allowing our heart to even become more hardened and the final result is God’s wrath on us, (Mark 3:5, John 12:40, Romans 2:5). A hardened heart can also become the devils playground, (John 13:2). There is hope and a solution if we will truly repent and ask God for forgiveness, (Acts 8:21&22). See you in Church next Sunday.
