Wow, what a start to the New Year. The good news is that there was neither one fatal accident nor injury accident in our county during our holidays. This has been one of our goals, along with DPS and that is to work hard to slow down the traffic speed and to slow down the alcohol related accidents and fatalities on our roadways. You do this by enforcing the traffic laws and by a heavy presence on our roadways. You do this by making traffic contacts and working with other agencies and the public to put the right patrols in the right spots at the right times to hopefully make a difference. You don't do this by playing it safe and not working traffic and worrying about who is going to get offended or angry or complain on you for doing your job.The bad news was that we did have a very busy night at the jail on New Years Eve and into the early morning hours of New Years Day. There were a total of six individuals arrested during that time frame, with four of them being for Driving While Intoxicated. The breath results from the four DWI arrests ranged from 0.09 to a 0.23 and three were misdemeanors and one was a felony resulting from having a child in the vehicle. There were also two additional arrests made that evening, one for Public Intoxication and one for unlawfully carrying a weapon, and these were misdemeanors as well.We had some more good news and that was that in the county we had no reported burglaries nor thefts over the holiday break. We have had extra patrols out and have been working on traffic both on the highways and on the county roadways in order to ensure that we continue to know who and what is moving on them. We will continue to patrol as thoroughly as possible both in an attempt to slow down the narcotics traffic and the intoxicated drivers, as well as protect the ranchers and property owners from those who would commit other crimes. Please contact us if you have unusual traffic in your area and are concerned. We have been working and training hard at the jail and are currently accepting applications for the position of Jailer/Dispatcher. This job is very demanding and high stress and isn't for everyone, but if you are interested in the position, please go by the jail and speak with Brenda Willis and fill out an application. The position involves working with computers and you must have some typing and basic computer skills. It is a dual position and therefore you must be able to work on the jailing side as well which entails handling arrested persons and moving them through the process of booking and to and from the jail.We are looking forward to serving you in the coming year and wish the best for all of you and your families. Please help us keep San Saba a beautiful and safe place for those of us who live here and those who come to visit by reporting any crime or suspicious activity. You can contact us at 325-372-5551 or 5432 and if it's an emergency, please call 911. Thank you for all your support
