Have you made a New Year’s Resolution? Almost everyone probably wants to improve their health and eating habits. Choosing small steps makes your goal easier to do and makes it easier for you to stick with. Choose one of the following 12 tips each time you grocery shop. 1. Five veggies in your grocery cart. Buy at least 5 veggies and use them up by the end of the week.2. 5 fruits in your grocery cart. Your goal you should work to is having more fruit on hand than crackers, cookies, snack bars and chips.3. Compare sodium. Check the label and purchase food items that have 5% or less of the daily value for sodium or say no added salt.4. Make it. Cooking it yourself means you control the amount of salt and fat you use.5. Beans. Use beans in one or more meals per week to add more fiber to the diet.6. Kitchen makeover. Having the right equipment makes cooking easier.7. Healthy pantry. Keeping whole grains, oatmeal, rice, pasta on hand makes nutritious cooking easier.8. Protein better. Focus on lean meat, poultry, fish, beans or nuts. Buy less sandwich meat which is high in sodium and fewer cuts of meat which have lots of fat.9. Beverage without sugar. Water or unsweetened tea are the best choices.10. Herbs and spices. Use pepper, garlic parsley mix, Italian seasoning, chili powder, cinnamon, bay leaves, cumin, coriander, nutmeg, apple pie spice to add flavor to your food.11. Potatoes. Buy several different kinds and find new recipes to serve them different ways.12. Condiments and dressings. Go for low sodium and high flavor with these: salt-free ketchup, flavored vinegars, lemon and lime, Lowfat dressings and marinades, low-sodium sauces.
