Last week, Coach Jeff Pannell announced the San Saba Armadillo players that were awarded all-district honors. Let’s take a look at why.Co-newcomer of the year was junior Nathan Amstead. Amstead did not begin the year as a starter. By the time district play began, Amstead was anchoring the defensive line at nose guard. His play was dominant and made several key tackles throughout district and into the playoffs. He will be the anchor for the line in 2012. First team offense was led by running back Zack Davis. Davis had almost 600 yards rushing in five district games. Tight end Isaac Jimenez joins Davis as a good blocker that is capable of making catches across the middle and in traffic. Center Tanner Weyerts and tackle Wil Sloan are the other first team offense. Second team offense saw receivers Luke Cox and Clayton Perry named. Cox led the team in catches (6 in district play) and in touchdown receptions while Perry showed his ability to make big catches on third down. Quarterback Ryan Pannell joined them. Pannell used his legs (4 rushing and one receiving touchdown) as well as his arm (16 completions for 220 yards) in leading the Dillo offense to a 3-2 record in district. Finally, Allan Hale joined Zack Davis at running back. Hale had 540 yards rushing in district play.First team defense included linebacker Isaac Jimenez. Jimenez was one of the leading tacklers in all of 2A in Texas with 185 tackles. Joining Jimenez was fellow linebacker Alex Cervantes. Safety Ryan Pannell led the team in interceptions (4) to make the squad and lineman Wil Sloan completed the first teamers. The second team has cornerback Luke Cox. Cox had two fumble recoveries along with two interceptions. The other two Armadillo linebackers were named to this squad, junior Russell Lowe and Davis. Tanner Weyerts completes the announced team. The academic all-district team was also announced. Named to this team were Cox, Hale, Perry, Pannell, Sloan, Weyerts, Connor Arrington and Dominic Rosales.
