Thursday, November 17, 2011 • Posted November 17, 2011

On Saturday, the San Saba 3rd and 4th grade traveled back to Lampasas to play the Burnet Bulldogs for the Hill Country Football League championship. The Dillos played hard and battled to the end and came out with a big win 21-6. San Saba started the game up on a roll scoring on the opening drive and going up quick 8-0. After the 1st score, the offense stalled a bit and the bulldogs and Dillos traded possessions for the rest of the half. The 2nd half started off the same with both defenses playing very well, until late in the 3rd. Burnet was finally able to muster up a drive and score. The extra point bounced off the upright making the score 8-6. Midway through the 4th quarter, the Dillos stepped it up and drove the ball down the field and scored on a nice clock eating drive, with the 1 point conversion good, San Saba went up 15-6 with a little over 2 minutes to play. Burnet tried to make a come back but once again the Dillos came up huge with a fumble recovery. With less than a minute left San Saba was working down the clock when the "O" line demolished the bulldogs and helped turn a 5 yard run into a 60 yard TD. The extra point was no good making the final score San Saba 21, Burnet 6.With the win San Saba improved to 7-1 on the season. The lone loss came at the hands of Burnet early in the season, but San Saba avenged the loss twice, once winning 34-12 and the other win came this week in the championship. We have been pushing these boys since August, all the running, sweating, and more running finally paid off. The coaches couldn't be prouder of these kids and we look forward to starting up where we left off this year. Thank you parents for your patience and all the volunteer help throughout the year.I would also like to thank all the Varsity football players that went to the games this year and rooted the boys on, you can't imagine how much our boys really look up to you and just having their heroes tell them good job was a really big morale boost to them. Thank you, Jim Faught for bringing the air horn to the last game and supporting the boys. Special thanks to Double G Pit Stop for donating ice to our team all year and helped us out tremendously. Thank you to Harry's for donating the boots for our raffle this year, the money we raised helped buy all of our new helmets. Thank you Larry and Christa Triplett for your donation that provided new jerseys for the 5th and 6th grade team this year. And last but not least, a big thanks goes out to the San Saba Chamber of Commerce for their donation to the league that helped cover the cost of renting Rogan Field. Without all of this support from the community, the San Saba Youth Football League wouldn't have been possible.
