Armadillos advance to area

Behind a ground game that ran from A (Allan Hale) to Z (Zack Davis), the San Saba Armadillos advanced to the area round of the playoffs with a 27-7 win over the Stockdale Brahmas at Canyon Lake High School’s Hawk Stadium. Davis had 163 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns with Hale added 105 yards.Stockdale won the toss and wanted the football to start the game. Moises Vega kicked to the Brahmas and the ball was returned to the 30 yard line. A failed pass on 3rd down forced a punt from Stockdale. The punt rolled dead at the Armadillo 18.On 3rd down, Zack Davis went to the left side on a sweep and raced 73 yards for the score. A penalty flag was waved off on the play and the touchdown stood. Rodney Ortiz came on the kick the PAT but it sailed wide to the right leaving the score 6-0.The two teams traded punts on their next possessions before the Brahmas took over at the 41 yard line. Stockdale tied the game on a run from Trevor Baumann of 11 yards. The PAT was good and Stockdale led 7-6 late in the opening quarter.The Armadillos could not move the ball and Russell Lowe punted back to Stockdale. The Brahmas moved the ball to the Dillo 44 using almost 5:00 of clock before punting. The ball rolled into the end zone for a touchback. San Saba was thwarted again and the Lowe punt went only 18 yards. The Brahmas had good field position at the Dillo 47 and looked to increase the lead. Ryan Pannell had other ideas. Pannell intercepted a pass from Colton West at the goal line and returned it to the 12 with 0:27 on the clock. San Saba ran out the clock to end the first half with Stockdale clinging to a 7-6 lead.San Saba got the ball to start the second half. Stockdale tried an onside kick. The ball was recovered by San Saba at the Dillo 43, but an offside penalty on the Brahmas moved the ball to the 48 yard line. San Saba used 8 running plays to move down the field. Zack Davis put the Armadillos ahead with a 1-yard plunge. Rodney Ortiz added the PAT and San Saba had the 13-7 lead.The Dillo defense forced a Brahma punt and San Saba started at the 26. The Armadillos kept to the ground game and used 10 plays to get to the 16-yard line. Ryan Pannell handed the ball to Zack Davis who immediately handed the ball to Luke Cox on an inside handoff. Cox worked his way into the end zone for the score. Rodney Ortiz was good on the PAT and the score was 20-7.As the final quarter started, Stockdale was moving the ball toward a touchdown. The drive ended when Pannell got his second interception of the game. The ball was returned to the Dillo 20.San Saba ran 8 plays capped by a 46-yard run by Davis for his 3rd score of the game. Ortiz put the PAT through the uprights and San Saba had the lead of 27-7.Stockdale ran five plays before turning the ball over on downs at the Dillo 29. San Saba ran the final 2:47 off the clock for the 27-7 bi-district win.Davis led all runners with 163 yards and 3 scores. Allan Haled added 105 yards. Alex Cervantes got 19 yards, Pannell garnered 17 yards and Luke Cox gained 16 yards on his touchdown run.The defense was led by Pannell and Cox. Contributing to the effort were Sean Argote, Nathan Amstead, Wil Sloan, Clayton Perry, Russell Lowe, Isaac Jimenez, Tanner Weyerts, Davis and Cervantes.The win sets up a game against the East Bernard Brahmas in the area round of the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 Friday night at Bastrop Memorial Stadium.
