25 Years AgoNovember 6, 1986One arrest was made and another is expected in a roofing nail episode which occurred late Saturday or early Sunday morning in which hundreds of square topped roofing nails were distributed at homes of San Saba County law enforcement officials.The San Saba County Jail received recertification last week, Sheriff Bill Williams commended his staff for their hard work in meeting the rigid specifications set forth by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The 102 year old structure is believed to be the oldest certified jail in the state.Bebee Faught, of Community Appliance in San Saba reported that the appliance store will donate a Charm Glow Smoker Grill to the Deer Roundup Contest. The contest is sponsored by San Saba Produce, San Saba News & Star and the Chamber of Commerce.The Directors of San Saba Cemetery Association express sincere appreciation to the Pierian Study Club for their most liberal gift of twenty crepe myrtle to the cemetery.50 Years AgoNovember 6-9, 1961Three San Saba county men have received their call for induction into the military service. They are James L. Yarbrough of Cherokee, Robert K. McHorse of San Saba, and Max Junior Martin of Star Route, Mercury.A report from the W.R. Shipp Gin last Friday, November 3, showed that a total of 865 bales of cotton had been ginned to that date. The cotton is about 60 percent harvested.Dwight Harkey and Barbara Maddox were selected as the county's Gold Star award winners by Billy F. Kidd and Mrs. Richard Murray, county agents, and the 4-H members were presented the award at the annual 4-H Achievement Program Monday night, November 6, at Richland Springs.A total of 4,473 permits to kill doe deer had been issued to 113 landowners to 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to Bill Tutor, game biologist of Burnet, who was in charge of issuing the permits.100 Years AgoNovember 9, 1911The next important attraction to appear at the Opera House will be Casey Jones, which comes to San Saba Thursday night, November 9.The new court house will be dedicated with appropriate exercises next Monday night. District court opens next Monday and a large number of people from different portions of the county will necessarily be in town. A program will be arranged. Judge Martin and District Attorney Dayton Moses will speak as representatives of the court and district. Judge Hartley and others will represent the commissioners court, the local bar, etc.T.A. Murray, Jas. F. Dofflemyer and A.J. Bowers were in Lampasas attending court Friday of last week.G.W. Edmondson accompanied his daughter, Miss Mae, to Hall Valley Sunday.
