The 2011 fall meeting of District V, Zone I of Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. was held on November 1st at the idyllic setting of Soap’s Place on Highway 190 near San Saba. Members of the San Saba Garden Club, under the leadership of co-chairs Ella Burton-Pavich, PhD and Anna Wilson, welcomed members of clubs from Brownwood, Goldthwaite, Gatesville, Temple, Killeen, Kempner, Lometa and special guests. The morning session, which began at 9 a.m. with registration, shopping at the District Ways and Means table and a continental breakfast, included a welcome from Stan Weik, San Saba City Manager. The business meeting of the district was under the direction of Zone I Director Sherie Clarkson. Following the business meeting, a luncheon of chicken salad, fruit or tiny cakes, and iced tea was served by Chef Teresa and Sous-Chef Fay. The beautiful ambience of Soap’s Place under the trees by the flowing San Saba River helped everyone to relax and enjoy a visit with friends from across the district during the lunch break. The afternoon session began with a celebration of the lives of two members of San Saba Garden Club in memoriam– Connie Ballinger and Dorothy Miller, who was also a member of the Goldthwaite Garden Club. They were both very active members and are greatly missed. The program was “A Conversation on Gardening.” Panel members were: Bill Luedecke, a Master Gardener who writes a column for area newspapers including The San Saba News & Star; Penny Adams, a viticulture advisor; Vickie Sutterland, Master Gardener; Ned Schoenfeld, avid gardener and moderator Ella Burton-Pavich. Attendees were asked to formulate gardening questions. Participation was lively and not surprisingly, most questions involved water and drought-related problems. Materials donated by various businesses and presented in striking bright green bags were given to the participants. The meeting was adjourned before 3 p.m.The next meeting of the San Saba Garden Club will be on December 6th at the home of Ann McElroy, president. It is a holiday brunch/guest event and each attendee should bring a wrapped Christmas tree ornament (costing between $5 and $10) for our annual gift exchange. If you are interested in becoming a member of the club, call Carol Littlefield, membership chair, at 325-372-3883.The 2011 fall meeting of District V, Zone I of Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. was held on November 1st at the idyllic setting of Soap’s Place on Highway 190 near San Saba.
