Wow, what an awesome couple weeks it has been for the San Saba cross country members. On Oct. 24th we traveled to Coleman for district. We competed extremely well overall, and I was very proud of the kids’ accomplishments. In junior high girls, we had a bunch compete and do well. In 7th grade girls Kimeri Moore came in 10th with a time of 16:50, Berkeley Barfield came in 25th with a time of 18:19, Saveria Vasquez came in 26th with a time of 18:21, Juana Macias came in 27th with a time of 18:29, Bailie Santeufemia came in 31st with a time of 18:55, and Kelli Ott followed behind her coming in 58th with a time of 23:02. In 8th grade girls, Alexus Saldivar came in 2nd with a time of 14:37. I am extremely proud of these girls for sticking with it and getting better as the season went. I am looking forward to working with them again next year and hopefully getting even better. In the junior high boys, we only had two competitors. John Watson and Logan Guidroz. These guys went out there and got after it and ran great. John came in 4th place and Logan came in 6th. I would like to give these guys a hand for all their hard work and being so committed to two sports at one time. (cross country and football) Ya’ll did an awesome job and I am very proud of you. Now, to the JV girls. This group I just kind of put together at the last minute, but I knew would get out there and compete and they did just that. This group hadn’t been practicing like the rest, but went to district and won third place as a team. I couldn’t have been more proud of them. Shellby Buttler placed 7th, Kayla Kutin placed 12th, Joely Haverland placed 18th, Ashley Pulatie placed 23rd, and Candace Saldivar placed 25th. They did a great job this year competing and helping their team out.In the varsity girls division, I knew it was going to be an extremely close race to see which teams qualified for regionals. I’m not sure who was more nervous heading over there on Monday morning, the girls or me. Well once again, they came out and competed and didn’t fail to surprise me. We got 3rd as a team, which means all the girls qualified for regionals. I was one proud coach when we got the final results. Alexa Maxcey placed 8th with a time 14:13, Shea Scott came in right behind her placing in 9th with a time of 14:13 also, McKenna Maxcey placed 15th with a time of 14:49, AJ Gamboa placed 23rd with a time of 15:36, Yicelle Cuevas placed 27th with a time of 15:45, Hailey Osbourn placed 28th with a time of 15:50, and Andrea Jimenez placed 42nd with a time of 16:29.In varsity boys, Hector Paez was the only one to qualify for regionals as he won the varsity boys division with a time of 17:55. Daniel Garcia was next placing 13th with a time of 19:33, Jantzen Bell placed 28th with a time of 21:56 (his best of the year), Diego Lara placed 31st with a time of 22:39 (his best of the year), and Julian Coronado placed 32nd with a time of 23:02. The guys worked hard all year and I appreciated the dedication and time they spent in cross country. I greatly appreciate it all.Now on to regionals. We headed out Friday morning so we could get to Lubbock early enough to walk the course on Friday and for all the “rookies” to see what regionals is all about. I will have to say what an interesting trip it was from one of our poor girls getting hit on by Brownwood guys and being bowed down to, to the infamous “buffalo wing” story at Buffalo Wild Wings, to the random lights and tv at the hotel that me and Coach Cummings experienced, to our slowest convenient store shoppers ever, to a fun team night out at Main Event. I think we did it all, but it will probably be a trip that will never be forgotten. Saturday morning we all got up ready to head over to Mae Simmons Park and run at Regionals which for all the girls was their first time to ever run there. I assure you their eyes were huge!! The girls ran at noon on Saturday and to be honest, it is hard to tell how they are doing because there are so many girls. After looking at the results, there were a lot of positives that came from this meet and these girls should be proud of their accomplishments. Alexa Maxcey ran a 13:34 (best time of the year by 10 seconds), Yicelle Cuevas ran a 13:59 (best time of the year by 21 seconds), AJ Gamboa ran a 14:11, Shea Scott ran a 14:18, Hailey Osbourn ran a 15:28 (best time of the year by 22 seconds), and Andrea Jimenez who ran her best time of the year by 25 seconds!! Hector Paez ran a time of 18:50.There is so much I could say about all these kids but it would be way too long for this article. I am SO extremely proud of these kids and their commitment and dedication to the cross country program. It’s definitely not easy for any kid to get up at 5:30 every morning for practice, but all of them stuck with it and overcome a lot while doing it. I have been extremely blessed to coach such an AWESOME group for my first year as head coach and I look forward to many more years. Thank you all for being such a blessing to me and for working so hard over the months!!!!Wow, what an awesome couple weeks it has been for the San Saba cross country members.
