“Back to back, they faced each other.” The Coyotes and Indians are back in the same spot as 2010, first and second place in Division II District 15 and will take on the same opponents as last year. The District Champion Richland Springs Coyotes draw the runnerup team in District 16, the Buckholts Badgers, and the Cherokee Indians once again will take on the District 16 Champion, Calvert Trojans. The Indians, with a convincing win over Mullin last Friday night, advance for the second straight year to face the perennial powerhouse Trojan team. Calvert 9-1, at this point last year, has a 4-5 record this year and appear to be a lot more vulnerable than last years’ team which gave the Coyotes a 66-58 scare on their way to the State Title. Cherokees’ only losses this year are to District Champions Lometa and Gustine (36-30) and undefeated Zephyr and Richland Springs. Cherokee looks to revenge a 29-22 loss to Calvert in 2010s’ Bi-district round in Evant at 7:30 PM this Friday night. The 10-0 Coyotes have cruised into the playoffs, mercy ruling 9 of 10 teams this year, and will have an extremely rare home field playoff game against Buckholts this Friday night at Coyote Field in Richland Springs. The respective coaches normally mutually agree on a neutral site for their play off games with a coin flip or even “paper..rock..scissors” being a last deciding resort. Last year, a neutral site could not be agreed upon, so the always accommodating Coach Burkhart, suggested a “Home and Home” series, with the Coyotes traveling to Buckholts last year, and the Badgers coming to Richland Springs the next time the two teams faced each other. The Buckholts coach readily agreed and the Badgers will now have to travel the 3+ hours to take on the mighty undefeated Coyotes at the rowdy and raucus Coyote Field. What goes around.... ? One of the most exciting aspects of this years’ playoffs is the real possibility of an All San Saba County Quarterfinal matchup. Richland Springs would have to defeat Buckholts and the winner of the Jonesboro/Rising Star contest and Cherokee would have to beat Calvert and the eventual winner of the Gustine/Cransfils Gap game. Any ideas for a neutral site? No matter the outcome, these are exciting times for local residents. Please support your favorite San Saba County Six-Man team this Friday night. Go Coyotes Go !!!
