Behind another outstanding ground game, the San Saba Armadillos secured a playoff berth for the third consecutive year defeating the Junction Eagles 55-7 in Junction last Friday night. This is only the second time in school history the Armadillos have made the playoffs in three straight years. The other time was 1987-1989. The Armadillos had 441 yards rushing while the stingy Dillo defense allowed Junction only 145 yards in the game. The Eagles did not get a first down until 2:15 left in the 3rd quarter.San Saba won the toss and deferred to the second half. Moises Vega kicked the ball to Junction. The Eagles gained 7 yards before the Armadillo defense forced the punt. Nathan Amstead got free and partially blocked the kick resulting in a 7 yard punt.San Saba gained a first down before failing on 4th down at the Eagle 24. Three rushing plays netted 4 yards for Junction and the returned was muffed but Luke Cox fell on it at the San Saba 39.The offense seemed to have a few problems getting going until Zack Davis broke loose on a 36-yard run. The run set up a 1-yard run by Allan Hale for a touchdown. Rodney Ortiz added the PAT and San Saba had a 7-0 lead with 2:11 left in the opening quarter.The Eagles were stopped again on 3 plays. After the punt, San Saba drove to the Eagle 9 but the field goal went wide left.Junction gained 7 yards before punting for the 4th time in the game. The San Saba offense used 4 plays to score on a 31-yard run by Allan Hale. The PAT made the score 14-0.The Dillo defense stopped the Eagles for the fifth time taking over after a punt at the San Saba 40.The 11-play drive was capped by a 2-yard run by Zack Davis. The last was a 52-yard run on an option play where Verette kept the ball and cut up field to open territory. The PAT made the score 48-7.The second string defense got in on the action and Juan Carlos Garcia recovered a loose ball at the Eagle 28. After a penalty moved the ball to the Junction 12, Verette raced the distance for his second score of the quarter.
