Celebrate Veterans Day

Veterans Day is this Friday, November 11 and several groups are collaborating to offer a variety of celebration opportunities.Appreciation Breakfast for Veterans:The festivities get underway at 7:00 am with a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast sponsored by San Saba ISD. All veterans are invited. The breakfast, which will be served in the Cafeteria of the Elementary School, will be followed by a patriotic musical program presented by the students. Blue Star Memorial Marker:At 11:00 am, the Garden Club will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony at the Blue Star Highway Marker on U. S. Highway 190 across from the entrance to Mill Pond Park. Parking will be available at the Parkview Baptist Church. San Saba Police will be on hand to monitor traffic and provide assistance. The entire community is invited and limited seating will be available. Veterans will be honored guests.Garden Club President Ann McElroy will welcome guests, Fred Hardy will lead the pledge of allegiance, LTC William R. Hulgan, US Army (Retired) will read a patriotic tribute and Rev. Celia Kitchens, pastor of the Bend and Lometa First United Methodist Churches, will close with prayer. Tanner Hawkins, trumpet section leader for the Golden Armadillo Band, Eagle Scout and grandson of Garden Club member Imogene Hawkins, will play “Taps.” In case of rain, this event will be held at the Gazebo in Mill Pond Park.The Blue Star Marker Program was adopted by the National Council of State Garden Clubs in 1945 and covers thousands of miles of highways across the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. The program honors all men and women who have served, are serving or will serve in the armed services of the United States. The Blue Star became an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners and in homes for sons and daughters away at war. San Saba’s Blue Star Marker was erected about twenty years ago by our local garden club.San Saba Historical Museum:Following the ceremonies at the Blue Star Marker, everyone is invited to the San Saba County Historical Museum. Lynn Blankenship, Museum President, will be available to lead guests through the military section of the Museum which includes exhibits describing the courageous contributions of many of San Saba’s military heroes. The museum will be open until 2:00 pm on Friday.At the museum, Roger Whatley, one of San Saba’s favorite entertainers, will play a variety of patriotic and military music and invite the crowd to sing along. Selections will include a military medley honoring each of the five branches of service and other songs that will inspire you to sing in your loudest voice. KNUZ/KNBR Radio Station Manager Skeebo Norris will play patriotic music throughout this week to get you ready for this fun sing along. Rotary Club President Kevin Shahan reports that Rotarians will place American flags at the Blue Star Marker site, at the museum and at various other locations throughout our town.Please take time to celebrate Veterans’ Day.
