The Zephyr Bulldogs JV asked for a home field rematch after last weeks closely contested loss to the Richland Springs JV at Coyote Field, with an open week in their schedule the Coyotes were able and happy to oblige the request. This game resembled the first, with lots of hard hitting and defense, but both offenses struggled mightily in the first half. The teams could only muster three touchdowns each, with the Coyotes ekeing out the win, thanks to Trevor Tinneys’ PAT kicks (2 of 3) for 4 points. The Bulldogs did not attempt a kick, relying on the 1 point PAT attempts via rushing(1 of 3). Jacob Cohn gathered up the Bulldogs’ opening attempt at an onside kick and returned it to the Bulldogs 3 yard line to set up Ty Manns’ touchdown run and the early lead at 6-0 (PAT kick is no good). From that point, the game settled into a defensive struggle, with both teams trading scoreless possessions for the remainder of the half and well into the third quarter. Hard running by Trevor Tinney and Stanley Butler sets up a five yard toss by Ty Mann to Dillon Parker for the Coyotes’ second score, with 1:58 left in the third period (PAT kick is good), Coyotes lead 14-0. The Bulldogs answered right back with a 40 yard scoring run right up the middle to make it 14-7. Trevor Tinney returns the kickoff back to the Bulldogs’ 38 yard line and then has a beautiful run for a touchdown and kicks the PAT to increase the lead to 22-7. The Bulldogs promptly score again from 54 yards out to close the margin to 22-13 with 5:52 left in the game. With the Coyotes driving and eating up the clock, on third an three, Manns’ pass is picked off, and the Bulldogs drove for a touchdown to narrow the deficit to 22-19. The Coyotes ground up the remaining two minutes on the clock to seal the win. Ty Mann had 10 carries for 40 yards and one touchdown. Stanley Butler had 3 carries for 32 yards. Trevor Tinney had 8 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown and added 2 PAT kicks for 4 points. Dillon Parker had one run for 8 yards and caught a touchdown pass for 5 yards. Mann was 2 for 6 throwing the football for 21 yards with 1 interception and 1 touchdown. Storm Teel threw 2 passes and completed 1 for 10 yards. Trevor Tinney led the defense with 8.5 tackles and Stanley Butler had 3 tackles and an interception to halt one of the Bulldogs’ scoring drives. Wyatt Ramsey, Justin Trevino, Jacob Cohn, Dillon Parker, Jonathan Patino, and Ty Mann all recorded multiple tackles in the game. Congratulations to Coach Michael Brand and the JV Coyotes for a fine season, finishing with a 7-1 record, and winning the JV District Title, their only defeat versus Lometa on a dramatic controversial last play “no touchdown” call. The JV boys schedule is complete but they will be practicing and traveling with the Varsity team on their “Drive for Five” playoff run. Go Coyotes Go !!!!
