The chill of fall is in the air and an even greater air of anticipation is permeating the area – hunting season! Signs are going up around stores, hunting blinds are being cleaned up and feeders are slinging food for the deer. The deer seem to have picked up the excitement in the air as well. The deer that wander around here are herding up, and seem to be a little more skittish than usual. I like this time because it is perfect sleeping weather. You can hunker down under a blanket and feel the cool on your face. I’m not hurrying winter by any means. I just like the cool, especially after a long summer of extremely hot!I noticed the road into town has been cleaned up. Thank you to whatever good person tidied up that little eyesore. I wish I could get some of the other eyesores in town cleaned up. I saw one of our derelict houses is being torn down. That will help the people in that area. I attribute some of the sickness in town, to these trash heaps. They have to be rat infested and germ ridden. There’s no telling how many different diseases are being bred in the midst of all that ugly trash. We need to send out notices that junk cars need to be hauled off, and trash heaps need to be sent to the dump. There are junk dealers that will haul some of the stuff off for free. I’ve mentioned this before, but it bears talking about it again. It’s not a matter of being poor. My family was poor and we lived in a tiny four room frame house. My cousins thought we lived in the slum, but they were wrong. Our house was always clean. Our yard was tidy and well kept. There was no trash lying around for folks to see. We bathed every night and came to school clean. We might not have much to spare, but we were clean and proud. I guess you can get beat down and just not care anymore, but you can’t bring your children up in a defeatist atmosphere. Life is tough enough without starting them off on the wrong foot.Speaking of cleaning up, I understand the cemetery association is having a clean up at the cemetery this Saturday. The recent rain blessing we received has caused some graves to sink and the winds blew some things around. The committee is hoping they will have some community help to put our beautiful little cemetery to rights. Ginger told me they were down to six working members, so if you feel called to donate time and effort, this would be a good cause. If you need more details, you can call Ginger at the water office or the hardware store. Our little guys have done it again. The super bowl games on Saturday resulted in wins for our two flag football teams and the 5th and 6th grade team as well. I know some people think we start them off in football shortly after they learn to walk, but that’s not so. We wait until they at least turn three. Isn’t that a little later then when we put them on a horse? If I understood the message correctly, it seems our girls have won District cross country. Taylor Terry took first place and carried the team to victory. Congratulations to all the ladies involved. Way to go Coach Lewis and Coach Starr. The Ag department will begin their fruit sales this week. If a student hasn’t found you before the end of the week, you might contact the school. The Trunk or Treat event took place on Saturday as planned. I think everyone had fun. I know the kids collected quite a bit of candy. I guess they will also be out on Monday evening as well. I’m thinking the next week or two is going to pass in one gigantic sugar rush!Sixteen super women went to Brady Wednesday night and enjoyed the great food at Mi Famillia Restaurant. Before we ate, we filled the quilting shop with tons of laughter, and dozens of bolts of fabric. The store is always good to stay open late for us. I added to my hoard of beautiful fabrics. I wish the finished product was as beautiful as the material. The elementary students are in UIL study mode. It gets difficult juggling classes and UIL study times. I don’t have as many competition areas this year, as I have had in the past. Our kids do well every year; we just never have enough students to win overall. The students must work at home, as well as at school, if they are to be successful. Please encourage your student to work hard if they have entered an event. Competition for elementary will be the first week of December. The big Booster Bingo Night is this Saturday. Jason Lewis made several announcements at the game Friday night. I’m just never sure anyone hears what the boot says with all that loud music blaring across the field. The sound system is great, don’t get me wrong, but it is way loud! So as I was saying, the bingo night is this Saturday. They have over $2000.00 dollars worth of prizes. Bingo nights with my mom, were a weeknight tradition growing up. I hope everyone turns out for this night of fun, family and prizes. I wonder if that lucky Lusty family is going to be there? If they are, I intend to rub off some of their luck! Come out and join the fun! We’re waiting on other district games to see where our first play-off game will be held. Friday’s game against Mullin was a 46-0 rout. Ashley Grady, better known as Chewy the mascot, was chosen as Football Sweetheart and Ben Van Cleve was named the Football Beau. Those are two fine young people.Sheriff Brown and his two new Deputies came to school Thursday and Friday to discuss Red Ribbon Week and Halloween safety. Students were lectured on the dangers of drugs, including drinking and driving. We met the new drug dog Dominion. She is also an attack dog. I’m sure they don’t call them that, but when they bite you to stop you, I call that attack. Sheriff Brown made sure to tell the kids not to ever kick a police dog since that is the same as attacking an officer. There were officers out Saturday night and there will be officers out on Monday night, as the kids hit the streets. Please watch out for children in dark costumes. We have quite a few on the prayer list. I’m still waiting on pictures for the soldier’s wall. Frances Hibler was rushed to Fort Worth on Friday, but returned with good news over the weekend. It was feared she had an aneurism, but she will be treated for blood pressure issues. Doris Korenek is doing better. Hopefully she will be firmly on her feet before Alfred comes home. It was good to see Danny Tillery back on the football field. Please remember the family of Eugene Reavis at this time. We need to keep Robin Crisp, Lyn Green, Frank Green, Paul Gibson, Gaylon Robbins, Kevin Keeney and the Draper family in Australia, in your prayers. As a long distance granny, I can tell you that having your little ones so far away is difficult to say the least. The recent killings in Afghanistan have brought us more cause for grieving and prayer. This mother is extremely upset about the goings on over there. Please pray for our precious troops and their equally precious families. If you can help a soldier or his family weather the holiday season, please do so. The boxes for Operation Christmas Child are due to your organization by the 14th of November. Please God remember this beautiful country as you release the rain. God bless America. The chill of fall is in the air and an even greater air of anticipation is permeating the area – hunting season!
