Man alive, has it been busy in the San Saba County jail! I have seen our jail staff continually have to pick up the pace week after week. The calls for service are up both in the county and in the city as well. The traffic has been steady and it seems that we will have to wait a while for a slowdown of any kind. The jail has been running at no less than six, with the numbers ranging from that to eight and ten. We can go over eight but not for very long. Jail Standards tends to frown on that since we are only certified for eight. We currently house five out of county with two awaiting clearance by the state to enter prison and three awaiting trial. Our transports are down for the month of October and our mental transports as well. The jail is also currently working inmates as often as we can. We have limited resources in staff right now, but we are hoping to complete our training of two new hires and hire two additional part time staff as well. I am proud to report that the jail is clean and safe and will pass inspection. The deputies are also pushing hard on patrol and have made a lot of contacts during the past month. We are currently working on our year end numbers, which I messed up the first time, and will report those to you as soon as possible. I hate to say anything because as soon as you do, something happens but here it goes. We are currently seeing a drop in our burglaries and theft cases. Driving While Intoxicated cases are down a little and our narcotic cases are even down some from last year. We just had our first fatality accident (pray for the family) in some time and we have had no alcohol related deaths on our roadways this year. That fact, I am proud of and want to see that trend continue. We have also seen a reduction in the number of speeding citations that we have issued from our year one. To me this is all very good news for several reasons. The first is that it cuts down on our paper work and thank God for any reduction in that. The second is that I believe that the word is getting out and people are letting off the gas when they are coming into this county, which is a very good thing. This goes to show what proactive patrol and good citizen involvement can do when working together. We really want to thank all of you who have helped put us in the right place at the right time to take an intoxicated driver off the streets, or contact a reckless driver before someone gets hurt.I am very thankful to God for answering a special prayer for me. We have been looking for a deputy for our vacancy for some time and about the middle of October our prayers were answered. Chase Stiles, of Mason County was hired and is currently in training to take the deputy spot in Richland Springs. Chase comes to us from DeLeon Police Department and brings with him a special weapon. The weapon has four legs, runs faster than me and will bite even a Baptist Deacon like Larry Shivener if asked to. Her name is Dominion and she is a three year old German Shepherd and a certified K-9. She specializes in five narcotics and is patrol trained and can and will bite when ordered to do so. Now, she is wonderful with kids and other pets, just when on patrol she is all business. When you get a chance, say hi to Deputy Stiles and his beautiful partner, Dominion. It's getting into the holiday season again so let's start focusing on our safety and that of our family and our wallets. Keep your cars locked and your wallets and purses with you. Don't leave valuables in your cars for the knuckle heads to see. Lock your house and check all your windows every time you are leaving and notify dispatch for extra patrol. Don't fall for those phone scams they are not real, and can only bring you lots of trouble. The safe rule is if it seems too good to be true, then it is. We will focus on more safety tips next week but lets all work together to make this a safe and wonderful holiday season for all of San Saba. Once again, thank you for your tips and information and ask that if you need to report anything please contact us at 325-372-5551 or 5432. If it is an emergency then please call 911.
