With a playoff spot on the line the 6-2 Mullin Bulldogs faced a rather daunting task last Friday night...to try to get a “W” at Coyote Field in Richland Springs. The Coyotes have not lost a game at home in over 10 years and the Bulldogs, like many others, were not up to this monumental challenge on Friday night. The Richland Springs Coyotes clinched their 10th straight District Championship and 25th consecutive victory by a score of 48-0 in another contest that ended at halftime due to the 45 point mercy rule. The Coyotes have 45’ed, 9 of 10 teams this year, and 22 of their last 25 opponents, including Sterling City in the State Championship game last year. Denim Reeves missed Tra Williams, who was wide open behind the Bulldog defenders, on the Coyotes’ first play from scrimmage. That play and a 17 yard completion to Thomas Fowler were the only two plays that didn’t result in a touchdown for the efficient Coyote offense. Unbelievably, the Coyotes ran only 8 plays in a 48-0 win, and scored on 6 of them !! Offensive Coordinator Shawn Rogers must feel like the kid in a candy shop trying to decide which play to call....’cause they’re all good. The Coyotes make it look easy but this kind of execution is the result of countless hours of preparation and plenty of “run it again”s in practice. Denim Reeves was the only rusher for the Coyotes on Friday night. He ran 3 times for 124 yards and yep...you guessed it... 3 touchdowns, including an incredible 68 yard run, where he appeared to be trapped several times, but ended up cruising into the endzone for the score. Reeves threw the ball 5 times completing 4 for 88 yards and 3 more TDs. Tra Williams, Chance Bush, and Danny Tillery all caught touchdown passes for 33, 23, and 15 yards respectively. Corey Bessent kicked a perfect 6 of 6 in PAT tries for 12 all-important points. Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Jerry Burkharts’ Pack defense held the Bulldogs to 134 yards in total offense on 35 plays (3.8 yds per average) and only 5 first downs while recording a fumble recovery and an interception. VanCleave again led the Coyotes in tackles with 12 including a sack and 2 tackles for losses. Danny Tillery, Chance Bush, and Tra Williams were closely bunched in the tackle department and all had sacks and tackles for losses. Chance Bush had an interception returned for a touchdown (Pick Six) negated due to a low blocking penalty. Denim Reeves, Winston Poe, Thomas Fowler and Gunner Mann added multiple tackles to the swarming Packs’ defensive totals. The Coyotes have a “Bye” next week and will relax while the league settles the rest of the playoff picture. Richland Springs will play the loser of next weeks’ Calvert/Buckholts game in the Bi-District round of the playoffs on November 11 (site to be determined). Congratulations to the players and coaches for another outstanding unbeaten regular season. The “Second Season” begins and the “Drive for Five” continues....stay tuned. GO COYOTES GO !!!
