The great University of Texas Coach Darrell Royal once said, “There are three things that can happen when you pass the football,...and two of them are bad”. I guess the Brookesmith coaches saw something in the scout films, a perceived weakness perhaps... something, that made them think they could pass the football against the Coyotes. The Mustangs threw the ball 27 times and completed 9 passes (33%)....10 were incomplete (37%), 8 were intercepted (29%) and 5 (18%) were returned for touchdowns (one TD was nullified due to an inadvertent whistle). Coach Royals’ old maxim certainly rang true on Friday night, but his old “three yards and a cloud of dust” wouldn’t have worked either as the Mustangs could only muster -4 yards rushing on 14 attempts. The Coyotes scored 30 points on defense alone and totally dominated the Mustangs in every phase of the game. In fact, Brookesmith could only register 3 tackles on defense for the entire contest. The game mercifully ended at the half, avoiding any further beating of the proverbial dead horse. Chance Bush rushed 5 times for 91 yards and 3 touchdowns, caught 2 passes for 45 yards and 2 more TDs and added a 50 yard kick return for another score. Denim Reeves ran only twice for 52 yards and 6 points, completed 2 of 3 passes for 2 touchdowns and had five interceptions returning 3( one called back) for touchdowns. Cory Bessent kicked 8 PATs for 16 points and returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown. Ty Mann zipped 35 yards for a touchdown. Gunner Mann blasted 17 yards for 6 points. Ben VanCleave nailed the Mustang QB in the endzone for 2 points. Quarterback Thomas Fowler triggered the Coyote offense and provided outstanding lead blocking for the Coyote runners. Last but not least in the scoring line, is Joe Avila who intercepted a Mustang pass and returned it 79 yards (remember its an 80 yard field) for the final score of the night. Ben VanCleave again led the Coyotes on defense with 7 tackles, all solo, with two tackles for losses including the safety. Thomas Fowler had 4 stops including two for losses. Winston Poe again came up big with 4 tackles. Gunner Mann recorded 4 tackles including a sack and 1.5 tackles for losses. Ty Mann had three tackles which included 1.5 tackles for losses. Patrick Phillips snagged one of the many errant Mustang throws. Centerfielder Denim Reeves added 2 tackles to his 5 picks. Corey Bessent had two tackles along with the Pick Six and Chris Munoz recorded one tackle. The Coyotes are now 9-0 on the season and 3-0 in district play. They have clinched a playoff spot, and will play for the District Championship next week against Mullin at Coyote Field at 7:30 PM. Go Coyotes Go !!!!!
