Dillos fall to Bluecats 25-21

The San Saba Armadillos fell to the Coleman Bluecats 25-21 at Hufford Field in Coleman last Friday night. San Saba had opportunities to put points on the board but the Coleman defense stopped the Armadillos on four occasions on 4th and short. The Bluecat offense did just enough to get the win.Coleman won the toss and deferred to the second half. San Saba received the kick and started at the 31 yard line. After a 1st down pass went over Luke Cox’s head, Allan Hale went to the right side, hit the pile and bounced out for a 69-yard touchdown. Rodney Ortiz added the PAT and the Armadillos led 7-0.Coleman answered quickly. On their first play from scrimmage, Anthony Thomas pitched out to Blake Hammonds. Hammonds stopped and threw a pass to a wide-open Ryan Kuehler. Kuehler raced for the end zone and the 67-yard score. Reid Needham was good on the PAT and the score was tied at 7-7 just 44 seconds into the game.The Armadillos drove down the field again. This time the Coleman defense stopped San Saba when Hammonds intercepted a pass from Ryan Pannell at the Bluecat 5. Hammonds returned the interception to the Coleman 25.The Bluecats used 13 plays to cover the 75 yards. Anthony Thomas got the score on a 2-yard run. The PAT by Needham sailed wide right leaving the score 13-7.San Saba moved down the field to the Bluecat 24 before failing on 4th down.Coleman was unable to move the ball and Needham came on to punt. The ball went out of bounds at the Bluecat 47.The Armadillos next drive ended inside the Coleman 1 on 4th down. Good running by Zack Davis and Allan Hale put the Dillos in that position. The San Saba stopped Coleman without a first down and the Armadillos took over at the Bluecat 32 after the Needham punt.San Saba went 7 plays before Allan Hale scored on a 4-yard run after a face mask penalty on Coleman gave San Saba a 1st and goal. Rodney Ortiz made the score 14-13 with the PAT.Coleman ran off the last 38 seconds of the half.The Bluecats started the second half with the ball but were unable to move the ball. Anthony Thomas tried a pooch punt that was downed at the San Saba 43.The Armadillos stayed with the ground attack, using 7 plays before Hale got his 3rd score of the game from 3 yards. A nice run by Zack Davis set up the score. Ortiz put the score at 21-13.The Bluecats were stopped again and turned the ball over on downs at the Dillo 41. San Saba was stopped without a first down and Russell Lowe was on to punt. The punt went 35 yards and returned 35 yards to the San Saba 40.On the 2nd play, D. J. Terrell went through the line as a fullback and was not covered. Anthony Thomas threw a short pass to Terrell and he raced to the end zone for the 34-yard score. On the 2-point try, Ryan Pannell intercepted the pass leaving the score at 21-19 in favor of the Armadillos.San Saba began the next drive at the 7 after a penalty. The Dillos got to the 30 before being stopped on 4th down by the Bluecat defense.Coleman used 7 plays to score the go-ahead touchdown. Blake Hammonds score in an inside hand-off for the 7-yard run. The Bluecats went for 2 points again and the pass was picked off by Pannell again leaving the score 25-21.San Saba drove down the field. The drive was kept alive on a fake punt pass from Kelan Verette to an undefended Luke Cox good for 33 yards. The Armadillos failed again on 4th down at the Bluecat 24. Coleman gave the ball back to the Armadillos on downs at the Bluecat 37.The possession ended when Patrick Mound intercepted a Pannell pass with 0:20 left in the game preserving the 25-21 win. The win keeps Coleman tied with Sonora for the district lead at 3-0 while San Saba falls to 1-2.Zack Davis and Allan Hale were the running game for San Saba. Davis had 181 yards on 26 carries and Hale had 138 yards on 17 attempts and all 3 San Saba touchdowns. Clayton Perry had 2 catches for 11 yards. Luke Cox, Sean Argote and Jarrett Mathis had 1 reception each.The defense was led by Russell Lowe who seemed everywhere. Making big hits and stops were Isaac Jimenez, Wil Sloan, Diego Montoya, Alex Cervantes, Cox, Mathis, Perry, Nathan Amstead, Russton Ellis, Argote, Tanner Weyerts and Ryan Pannell.Last week saw Sonora handily beat Ozona and Junction squeaked past Harper. This week shows Junction going to Coleman, Sonora tackling Harper and the Ozona Lions coming to Rogan Field. San Saba is in an almost must-win situation to make the playoffs.This week is Parents Night with all varsity players, senior band members, cheerleaders and Dilloettes and parents being introduced before the game.
