Dear Editor:

To the people of San Saba...I am writing you concerning the upcoming bond election. I think that most of you that know me know that I am very conservative. I don't like to pay taxes any more than anyone else. I know that these are hard times. I am a farmer and a rancher as well as a teacher and coach. I have been part of San Saba Schools for thirty-five years. My children attended San Saba Schools. I have tried to give San Saba the best I have to offer. I love this town and the school and I'm proud of both of them.I am a member of the School Building Committee. I have toured the elementary campus and viewed the problems that exist there. I have visited with elementary teachers, the principal, the superintendent and some board members. We all agree that the campus is insecure. That is frightening to me. The campus floods and there is not an economical way to fix that problem. Just the last six inch rain had students displaced for a week while maintenance sopped up the water and mud. The electrical system is obsolete and cannot keep up with the technology that we must expose our students to. Every room has one wall that is glass. Where could the young students and their teachers go to escape a tornado or severe hail storm? When safety of young children is an issue, my penny-pinching conservatism melts in a hurry. There are two plans available to build an elementary, Plan A and Plan B. I am not going to take up space explaining them. You may visit the school central office or visit with Mrs. Glaze or the school board over the issues. What concerns me is what I call plan C. First of all, there is grant money from the federal government to help the taxpayer's load if we pass the bond and complete plan A or B. If the bond fails, the federal grant money will go to the next school in line for a building project. This money will not be available again. So here comes plan C. If we don't pass the bond, soon we are going to have to build an elementary school. It is not a matter of if, but when. Some government entity is going to come in and condemn the buildings for one reason or another. The result will be that the taxpayers will have to foot the bill with no grant money. So now in our infinite wisdom we will turn a four million dollar project into an eight million dollar project. Is that what we want? I just can't see not taking advantage of the grant money. If the bond fails, the school board will move forward with some sort of plan to relieve the elementary situation. They won't have much of a choice but to raise school taxes. So you the voter must decide, pay now or pay more later. It is not rocket science. This is my opinion and you may or may not agree with me, but whatever you do as a citizen, please stay informed and vote. It is your right and responsibility as a citizen of these great United States of America.

Sincerely,Ronnie SchulzeSan Saba TX.
