“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.” Proverbs 14:34

This past week we celebrated the two hundred and thirty second birthday of our nation. It was born with enthusiasm and excitement. It was born with commitment. It was born with loss to the framers of our constitution. It was born based upon biblical principles. I love this land.

Of all the nations that have ruled about two hundred years is the amount of time they were in power. Our nation has reached that mark. If the rest of our time on this earth exists in freedom, it will be because we are practicing biblical principals.

When a nation is destroyed it is usually because of the inner turmoil that exists rather than the outside forces. When a nation is weakened by the practice of sin, it is vulnerable to the outside forces that come against it.

Rome was a great nation. However, Rome disintegrated in the first century from within. They allowed all sorts of evil practices to be tolerated and great was their fall from power.

Today our country has sanctioned the abortion of unborn children. Animals are protected but children can be murdered. Homosexuality is gaining more strength every year. A recent ruling in a court in California has people who are of the same gender the right to be married. God destroyed people because of this (Genesis 19). Many have won victories in taking God out of schools, public places, etc. We are a weakened nation.

The words of Solomon ring in our ears, “Righteousness exalts a nation…” We must turn to follow the principles our founding fathers gave us if this nation is to remain strong. Those principles can all be found in the word of God. Are we all doing our part to be righteous?
