The world job market is competitive and education is a key to success. Many high school junior and senior students are busy preparing for higher education in colleges or universities. SAT and ACT tests are necessary for college and university entrance. Students are competing for available scholarships. Richland Springs is proud of junior Brooklyn McGinty. Brooklyn competed in the Farm Bureau’s Free Enterprise Speech Contest in Brownwood this past week. Brooklyn presented a six minute, memorized speech and won a plaque and a $1,000 scholarship. She will now compete at the state level for a $4,000 scholarship and a free week-long trip to Washington, D.C. A $1,000 scholarship is a nice start to a college savings.The Richland Springs junior high will play Brookesmith junior high at Richland Springs at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20th. Congratulations to the junior high athletes on their 52-6 victory over the Lohn Eagles last week. The Richland Springs junior varsity will play Zephyr junior varsity at Richland Springs immediately after the junior high game on Thursday. Congratulations to the junior varsity on their 48-0 victory over the Rochelle Hornets last Thursday.The varsity Coyotes defeated Lohn 84-22 in the 2nd district game last week. The varsity Coyotes (8-0, 2-0) will play Brookesmith at Brookesmith Field on Friday, October 21st at 7:30. Bring your spirit, noisemakers, and come out and enjoy our young athletes in what looks like will be a good match-up. Be sure to give the cheerleaders a big thumbs-up for their efforts. The cool, crisp evenings have been great football nights.Varsity basketball practice begins this week for girls. Girls get into the athletic action with basketball drills and practice beginning October 19th. Boys’ basketball practice begins October 26th. Many small schools like Richland Springs hold off on basketball practice for boys until football is over. There are not enough students to fill both the football roster and the basketball roster.Thanks to Gerald McKee and the San Saba Young Farmers for tagging the goats and sheep last Saturday for the San Saba County show and for the various state shows. The Young Farmers do a lot of behind-the-scene work to help our FFA and 4H students.We have a great community, students, teachers and staff.
