Broncos trample Armadillos 51-23

The Sonora Broncos made their first visit to Rogan Field a memorable one. Taking advantage of San Saba turnovers and miscues, the Broncos came away with a lop-sided 51-23 win over the Armadillos last Friday night. Sonora returned two interceptions for touchdowns and made big gains by breaking tackles that would have been for losses.Sonora received the opening kick and started at the 40-yard line. A sack by Wil Sloan pushed the Broncos back 11 yards. Two incomplete passes and Sonora punted to San Saba.A good run by Zack Davis put the ball deep in Bronco territory, but a Ryan Pannell pass was intercepted by Word Hudson in the end zone. Hudson returned the ball to the 26 yard line.On the second play, running back Imoni Cross lined up in the “wildcat” formation as quarterback. Cross took the snap and went around the right side for a 70-yard touchdown. Kade Wimberley added the PAT and Sonora led 7-0.San Saba could not move the ball on the next possession and Russell Lowe punted it back to the Broncos at the Bronco 42.Sonora used 12 plays on the drive and scored on a 2-yard run by Zach Badeaux on the first play on the second quarter. The PAT made it 14-0 in favor of Sonora.This is when the wheels fell off for the Armadillos. Dallas Payne intercepted a Pannell pass and returned it 15 yards for a score. The PAT from Wimberley made it 21-0. On the next possession, San Saba started at the 15. The Dillo offense gained 7 yards and Lowe was on to punt. The snap went over his head and into the end zone. Sonora tried to fall on it for a touchdown but the officials ruled the ball out of bounds and the Broncos were awarded a safety and 2 points. This made the score 23-0 and Sonora got the ball back after the free kick.The Broncos wasted little time. On the 4th play, Imoni Cross, from the “wildcat,” raced 32 yards for another Sonora touchdown. The PAT put the score at 30-0 with only 4:00 gone in the second quarter.San Saba drove down the field but failed on 4th and goal at the Bronco 1 yard line.The Armadillo defense got the ball back when Lowe picked off a pass from Clayton Parks. Starting at the Sonora 35, San Saba scored quickly on a 7-yard run by Sean Argote. Rodney Ortiz made the score 30-7 with his PAT.Sonora was not done for the half, however. The kick was returned to the Bronco 46. Three plays later Parks connected with Word Hudson on a 41-yard touchdown. Kade Wimberley made it 37-7 for the halftime score.San Saba started the second half with the ball. A good return and a penalty put the ball at the Bronco 41. Four plays later, San Saba pulled a little trickery. Back-up quarteback Kelan Verette lined up at running back. Ryan Pannell pitched the ball to Verette on a sweep. Verette then turned around and threw the ball back to a wide-open Pannell for a 19-yard touchdown. Ortiz made the score 37-14 with his kick.The Armadillos attempted an onside kick but the ball went out of bounds at the Dillo 40. A 5-yard penalty put the ball at the 35. Edward Garza gained 18 yards on the first play and Clayton Parks threw a pass to Hudson for 17 yards and the score. The PAT increased the score to 44-14.The Armadillos started the next drive at the 33 yard line. Ryan San Miguel ended it with a weaving 53-yard interception return for a score. The score was 51-14 after the Wimberley kick.The ensuing possession saw the Dillos drive to the Bronco 28 before failing on 4th down.A 42-yard “shovel pass” from Parks to Garza put the Broncos deep in Dillo country but the defense held when Pannell picked off a pass at the 15 yard line.San Saba drove the ball to the Bronco 42 before Russell Lowe was called on to punt. The punt rolled dead at the 6 yard line.San Saba tackled Jesus Vasquez in the end zone for a safety and score was 51-16.The free kick gave the ball to the Armadillos at the Bronco 44. Kelan Verette capped the drive with an 8-yard run. The PAT made the score 51-23.Sonora started the next drive at the 12 after the kick. The Broncos failed on 4th down at the 32. San Saba ran one play to end the game and the 51-23 Bronco win. The win puts Sonora in the driver’s seat for the district title while San Saba plays to make the playoffs.Sean Argote led the Dillo rushing attack with 96 yards and a score on 17 carries. Allan Hale added 63 yards but saw little action in the second half. Kelan Verette chipped in 42 on 5 carries and a score. Verette also threw a touchdown to Ryan Pannell. Zack Davis hurt a foot in the first half and did not play after that. Luke Cox had 2 catches for 28 yards.The defense had a rough time missing several tackles for losses. Wil Sloan, Isaac Jimenez, Argote, Diego Montoya, Russton Ellis, Alex Cervantes, Aaron Perez and Clayton Perry had key stops while Russell Lowe and Pannell had interceptions.This week has Sonora hosting Ozona, Harper tackles Junction and San Saba travels to Coleman in a game that most expect to determine the 2nd and 3rd place teams in the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 at Hufford Field in Coleman. Come out and support the team as they drive for the playoffs.
