Thursday, October 20, 2011 • Posted October 20, 2011

Mrs. J.P. (Irene) Cummings has been writing the column, Elm Grove Echoes for many years, and this reporter in San Saba wanted to meet and get information from this remarkable lady. Arrangements were made to meet Irene at the Elm Grove Gospel Sing at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 15th in the Community Center at Elm Grove.Irene’s daughter, Marilyn Suber, recognized this stranger as soon as I walked in the door of the Community Center and directed me to meet her mother. I was introduced to a most friendly bunch that really enjoyed singing gospel music and they even let me sing a solo. The singin’ started at 7 p.m. with about a 30 minute break to eat and fellowship and started back up with special music and group singin’ that was so enjoyable I couldn’t believe it was 9:30 p.m. when the singin’ stopped and time to interview Mrs. Cummings.Irene started writing the Elm Grove News in l965, 46 years ago. She will be celebrating her 89th birthday on November 17th which means she was 43 when she started the column. There are people who subscribe to The News just to read Irene’s column, and many read her column the very first thing. During the beginning of her writing, she needed to put it in the mail on Friday so it would be at The News on Monday. Some time ago arrangements were made for her daughter, Marilyn, to type the news and send it by e-mail. Three years ago Irene moved from Elm Grove to live with her daughter, Marilyn and her husband, Michael in Richland Springs. Such as the saying “you can take a person out of a place but not the place out of the person”, so there’s no problem in getting the news from Elm Grove.Irene and her late husband, Jesse who died in 2001, raised 5 children. There are 11 grand-children, and 10 great grandchildren at the present time. There has been many trips for school and sports activities of the grands and greats and Irene is an avid sports fan of the Texas Rangers. Irene’s one hobby is crochet and she can’t wait to get other things like her morning excercise walk and meals out of the way so she can crochet. Some of her items are available at Marilyn’s Beauty Shop which is being relocated at this time, according to the Elm Grove Echoes. Mrs. J.P.
