He looked around with a sheepish grin to see if anyone was watching. He did not see anyone. He looked again just to make sure. Again, no one was there to see what he was about to do. He took the money and as he left he was able to breathe a sigh of relief. He had successfully stolen from a widow who needed this money to live. This was the first time he had ever done anything like this. When he heard the widow would have to leave her house because she could not pay the rent, he began to feel something. It was a feeling he did not like. He was feeling the guilt that came with committing a crime. Can you identify? Has there ever been a time when you took something or done something that later you wish you hadn’t done. Sometimes we call this guilt. If a person has any kind of conscience, it will cause guilt to occur. He was known as the man after God’s own heart. He committed adultery with another man’s wife. She became pregnant and her husband was a soldier away fighting the enemy. Eventually the man after God’s own heart had him murdered. Of course, we know this is the man David, who fought giants and won. Listen to what he would say in Psalm 32:3, “When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.” (NASB) Does this sound like David was having a problem? It does to me. He was feeling the guilt of breaking God’s commandments. God had been nothing but generous and kind to David, but he had now turned against Him. When a person realizes that he has betrayed his God, he needs to turn back to Him and know with assurance that he will be forgiven. Can you see David having problem after problem because he had not come clean before God? Is that where you are now? Does a problem with sin cause you to wonder if God even cares about you or could ever forgive you? Let me say for sure that He does. Psalm 32 begins with David saying, “How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered!” NASB David has sinned. He has felt the guilt. When he confessed what he had done God forgave him and he could say, blessed (happy) is the man who is forgiven. There is no need to carry around sin when God is so willing to forgive you. Come clean and be happy! He looked around with a sheepish grin to see if anyone was watching. He did not see anyone. He looked again just to make sure.
