San Saba ISD Trustees discuss water damage at elementary campus caused by recent rains

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD met on Monday, October 10th at 6:00 p.m. in the Central Administration office for a regular meeting. President, Kim Kirk, called the meeting to order and established a quorum with all Trustees present. Everyone joined for the pledges to the American and Texas flags followed by the invocation by Kevin Shahan.

The following were recognized as Students of the Month: Elementary, Ana Lopez; Middle School, Holt Oliver; High School, Hailey Osbourn and Juan Ortega, Jr.

Superintendent, Leigh Ann Glaze reported on the following:

A. The November School Board meeting will be Monday, November 14th at 6 p.m.

B. The Community Forum is scheduled for Oct. 25th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

C. The FAST report is being prepared for the Comptroller.

D. The annual audit is scheduled for mid November.

E. Information on a new cafeteria card service system is being researched.

F. A UIL enrollment will be given by the end of the year.

G. There will be a SECO (State Electricle Coop) audit.

H. There was a discussion regarding the water damage to the elementary campus caused by the recent rains. Water damage occurred in three elementary classrooms, the white and red gyms, and small amount in the cafeteria. The classrooms will be vacated for one week until ready for use.

I. Election workers will be needed for the bond voting on November 8th. The Board will canvas the votes at the Board meeting on November 14th.

J. Amendments to the 2011-2012 budget were discussed.

The following Consent Agenda was approved by the Board:

1. The regular meeting minutes of September 12th.

2. Amendments to the 2011-2012 budget.

3. Pay bills presented to the Board.

4. The financial report presented to the Board.

5. Compensation set for election workers and listed election judges, alternate election judges.

Assistant Superintendent, Michael Bohensky, reported on the following: First 6 weeks in-formation; STAAR test; Math Lab - 7th grade thru 12th grade; Language Lab by Javier Baez; and Dyslexia information.

Kay Shackelford, Elementary Principal, reported an enrollment of 329 students and an average attendance of 97.58%; a mentor has been assigned to the elementary campus for school improvement measures and reports and information will be gathered to meet the guidelines established for the AYP status; a staff meeting will be November 19th for Conscious Discipline training; A BOLD Cluster Meeting for principals will meet periodically throughout the school year to share ideas & troubleshoot with one another; Reading specialists from the ESC (Education Service Center) will support the reading programs by visits and help; The Open House was a great success; the first six-weeks report cards have been sent out in the Thursday folder; A Fundraiser is under way with students selling items and earning rewards; The PALS students from high school will start regular visits that benefit both student groups; listed upcoming events.

The Middle School had an enrollment of 190 students and an average attendance of 97.06%; Life Skills class took a field trip to Sweetberry farms last week in Marble Falls; the 5th graders went to Mill Pond Park for Farm Safety Day on October 5th; October 10th was the first OFYP day; MS now has 96 laptops and two computer labs; Pep Rallies are scheduled on Thursday mornings at 8:45; the 7th & 8th grade science class-es are experiencing lab 2-3 times a week; Open House was a success; Mrs. Robertson, elementary counselor, is scheduled to the middle school every Tuesday morning; Principal Vicki Key, has the opportunity to attend the Lamar Principal Academy to be held in San Antonio.

Woody Martin, High School Principal, reported an enrollment of 202 students and an average attendance of 97.54%; OFYP day was Monday, Oct. 10th with help from CORE teachers; John King, an overseer, has been on campus and helping with Campus Im-provements; four teams of teachers in small groups are studying and will implement a book by Fred Jones; the Pride Program is well underway; and other programs are TAKS, CSCOPE, Bullying, UIL literary groups, Mentoring, & UIL Literary teams.

Superintendent Glaze gave the Athletic report for Athletic Director/Coach Jeff Pannell.

The Board took action on the following New Business:

a. Approved joining Equity Center with other small rural school districts for the purpose of speaking with one voice in the litigation of public school finance matters essential to the fair treatment of Texas taxpayers and public school children. Superintendent Glaze will be the representative of our district and vote.

b. After discussion, there was no motion for a request from a business owner for a reduction in delinquent taxes of $21,667.54 owed to San Saba ISD.

c. Approved the School Improvement Plan for SSHS.

d. Appointed President, Kim Kirk as Director to San Saba County Appraisal District. President, Kim Kirk, adjourned the meeting and announced a short break before an Executive Session.
