San Saba High School begins Mentoring Program
Thursday, October 13, 2011 • Posted October 13, 2011

Today began a new day in the quest to Raise The Bar at SSHS. We began today a Mentoring Program called "Mentoring Matters". We had 17 volunteers from the community and of course we had 33 folks that are regular teachers, administrators or aids. All last week we worked with our students letting them choose between all the Mentors that we had posted on the wall. Our Mentors, filled out a bio sheet of job related topics, listed all hobbies and listed a birth-date. We then had the students go by the wall and choose.

Today, we met for the first time. We had the students do a similar bio sheet on themselves. We spent about twenty minutes overall with getting to know one another and discussing the topic of Hunger in America. Earlier in the day we showed a short video clip of the stats on the hunger that we find in America today. In the next three weeks, we plan to have a food drive to give our students a chance to put words into action. By the way, all the food that we collect here in San Saba County will stay here in San Saba County.

We want to list and thank our Visiting Mentors, Darrin Barker, Kelli Barker, Pastor Curtis Chandler, Jan Crosby, Pastor Sam Crosby, Danny Ingram, Gale Ivy, Angela Johnson, Kim Kirk, Regan Kirk, Scott Meador, Monica Shahan, Debbie Shahan, Susie Nettleship, Charlotte Spence, Alvino Valdez and Robin Welch.

Of course we had all of our faculty and staff become a Mentor plus Vickie Key SSMS principal, Kay Shackelford SSES principal, Michael Bohensky and Leigh Ann Glaze from the central office. Also in the mix from SSES was Ceci Huron and Katherine Robertson. We even had a regular sub at the high school, Clarise Kehoe.

Thanks to all for a great start to this new initiative. It is our aim that every student at SSHS has at least one adult and ideally even more that they can trust.
