The San Saba Armadillos had the open week on their schedule last week giving the team a chance to rest before district play starts this Friday. This gives us a chance to look back at the season so far.The Armadillos opened the season with a win over the Ballinger Bearcats 28-14. The win broke an 8-game losing streak dating back to 1962.The following week was the “Battle of the River (bed)” in Goldthwaite. San Saba had a 20-point lead going into the final quarter and held on for a 35-29 win, snapping a 7-game losing streak to the Eagles.The third game saw the Wall Hawks come to Rogan Field. Wall had speed and quickness. The Hawks gained 360 yards rushing on the way to a 29-7 win over the Armadillos.San Saba traveled to Hamilton for the next game. The Bulldogs had a lead of 18-6 in the 2nd quarter after a couple of kick returns. San Saba came back to get the 34-24 win with a good second half.The final non-district game was Homecoming against the Lago Vista Vikings. The game had several big plays, including a 94-yard pass from Ryan Pannell to Luke Cox, the 2nd longest pass in school history. The Vikings won the game 34-16. This leaves the San Saba record at 3-2 going into district play. Last year, the Dillos were 1-4 against the same schedule and ended the regular season at 5-5.Zack Davis leads the team in rushing with 492 yards on 86 carries and 5 TDs. Allan Hales has 394 yards and 7 scores. Hale saw limited action the last 2 games because of injury, but should be ready for district. The team has 1031 yards and 12 TDs on the ground. This compares to 984 yards and 9 TDs last year.Luke Cox has caught 14 passes for 296 yards and 4 scores. Clayton Perry chips in with 9 receptions for 139 yards and Isaac Jimenez has a touchdown catch and a 2-point conversion in his 5 catches.Ryan Pannell has completed 33 of 60 passes for 510 yards and 5 scores. In 2010, he had 19 completions for 317 yards and 2 TDs at this point in the season.In games last week, Ballinger fell to 1-5 after losing to Jim Ned, Goldthwaite dropped to 4-2 when Marion rolled the Eagles 41-7. Wall remained undefeated at 6-0, Hamilton bet Tolar to improve to 2-4. Lago Vista (3-1) had the week off before starting play in district 13 div 1. Harper and Ozona lost. The standings for district teams are Sonora (5-0), San Saba, Coleman, Junction and Harper (3-2) and Ozona (2-3).This week play begins as Ozona goes to Coleman, Sonora goes to Junction and San Saba travels to Harper. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
