The Coyotes found themselves with a Tiger by the tail last Friday night in Gustine. The Division II 10th ranked Gustine Tigers came out with a roar, clawing and scratching from the opening kickoff. With just 2 minutes left in the first quarter, the Tigers were up 14-12. It seemed the Coyotes were about to be lunch for the starving Tigers. Gustines’ opening scoring flurry seemed to accomplish one thing....it awakened the sleeping Coyote beasts, from that point forward, it was all Coyotes....52 unanswered points!! Denim Reeves ran for 6 touchdowns and threw for 3 more to mercy rule the Tigers on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Tigers had to settle for a very small victory, they did survive past halftime. Reeves had 222 yards rushing on 19 carries and 6 touchdowns along with 7 of 10 passing for 97 yards and 3 more TDs. Chance Bush had 4 carries for 36 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 catch for 45 yards and a score. Danny Tillery caught 4 Reeves passes for 45 yards and 2 touchdowns and kicked 2 PATs for 4 points. Thomas Fowler had 2 catches and 1 run for 7 yards. Offensive Coordinator Shawn Rogers’ play calling netted 10 touchdowns on 34 plays. Danny Tillery led the Coyote defense with 10 tackles which included a sack and 2 tackles for losses. Ben VanCleave(broken thumb and all) had eight tackles, of which, 2 were sacks and 5 were tackles for losses. Chance Bush had eight tackles (1 for loss) and Tra Williams had 6 solo tackles of which one was for a loss. I swear one of the Tigers lost their stripes on one particular hit from Williams. Denim Reeves, Ty Mann, Gunner Mann, Patrick Phillips, Trevor Tinney and Thomas Fowler all recorded tackles in the defensive ledger. Head Coach Jerry Burkharts’ defense held the Tigers to a total of 1(one) yard rushing for the entire game. It's hard to find fault with a 50 point victory that is stopped after 3 periods of play. After a slow start, the Coyotes beat an inspired, well-coached, top-ten ranked opponent that was determined to bring them down. The Coyotes rose to challenge, fought back and prevailed. As Individuals, They are Beasts, As a Pack, They Are Unbeatable. Richland Springs opens District play this Friday night, taking on their cross-county rival, Cherokee Indians at 7:30 PM in Cherokee.
