Highlights of Harkeyville

A few folks from around our fair valley of the Pecan might make fun of the minute amount of moisture we received earlier in the week, but I know lots of folks that would have been blessed to have had it. Most of the reports we heard ran in the .20”- .30, with M. Cromer leading the league in S. S. Co. with a report of might near an Inch on up the River around Shaw Bend. Daddy & Jr. Goode reported about a quarter at most of our gauges, Algerita, Johnny Brown Lane, & uptown Brown, while Jackie Casebeer & R. Almaguer got .3 around Harkeyville. Maybe all the fireworks of the 4th will shake up the stratosphere and let it rain.

From the looks of all the posters & papers around town, it would appear that about anywhere you might want to go this weekend should probably have some sort of celebration for Independence Day. Food, fireworks, music, fun & games seem to be the norm for the 4th. Lampasas, Llano, Luckenbach, San Saba, Cherokee, and Richland Springs all have some festive plans. I’ll bet some folks might even be sporting some sort of commemoration down on Poppy’s Point. We do have quite a contingent crew of campers down that-a-way now-days. I have drawn duty to represent the “News” up at Richland’s “Stars & Stripes” parade & celebration the past few years, but they kick off pretty early on Sat. a.m., Ms. Benton said. Guess we’ll see how it works out.

Cookouts seem to be one of the most common occurrences of 4th of July weekends. Some of the traditional dishes listed seem to be hot dogs, BBQ Pork ribs, Beef Brisket, Sausage, Chicken, Potato salad, Watermelon, Ice cream, and Apple or Peach cobblers. A good ol’ fashioned Fish-fry in never frowned upon & usually well attended around these parts, as well. Son, Will is coming in from Waco but we haven’t discussed any of our favorite menu items as of yet. I’m sort of leaning toward getting some better-than-bargain wieners with a can of Wolf brand and doing Hot dogs. Surely would save some hot times of standing over a Q-pit most of the weekend. Lady Z & yrs. Truly usually have hot dogs with some of her plentiful Potato Salad and set in for watching the Boston Pops do their show over the Harbor. However, she has plans to be in Austin over the Holiday doing some party planning with Son, Jason, so I’d suppose that Daddy & I can do for ourselves. However all yall might do it, do well, be safe, and have a fun 4th. We might also note that Deanie Bagley will be as old as am I on Fri. So take a bit of time to remember what it’s all about and rest assured that the Mayor & yrs. Truly will be taking care of our parts out around———————Harkeyville!!!!!!!!!
