City of San Saba Tax Rate remains unchanged

The San Saba City Council held a public hearing prior to the regular meeting on Tuesday, September 13th, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor, Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present with Alderman, Martha Leigh Whitten absent.

Alderman, Charles Peeler gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

The proposed budget for FY 2011-2012 and tax rate for the 2011 tax year was presented.

The proposed tax rate remains the same, $.31942 per $100 evaluation. This tax rate will raise more total property taxes than last year’s by approximately $8,286.00 which is raised from the increase in the total tax roll this year. Although there was notices in The

San Saba News and Star as required, no citizens attended the meeting. Mayor Jordan adjourned the public hearing.

The Employee of the Month award for September was presented to Cole McDowell. Cole has worked for the Parks Department for seven years. He will have a day off with pay, a $25 gift certificate at a local restaurant, and his name added to the plaque.

Kevin Shahan, CPA, gave a report regarding an audit on local hotel/motels. This is the first audit and was for accountability for the taxes collected and check their policy’s and procedures. The owners were very cooperative providing financial statements and procedures of tax receipts.

The following consent agenda items were approved:

1. Minutes from the August 9th, 16th, and 23rd Council meetings.

2. Payment of bills presented to City Council.

3. Resolution No. 2011-18 authorizing the City to enter into an agreement with TxDot for the closure of Wallace Street on December 10th to accommodate the Christmas Parade.

4. Updated contract with Municipal Judge Leslie Dawson.

The following action items were approved after discussion:

A. Resolution No. 2011-19, the proposed budget presented at public hearings, for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2011 and ending September 30, 2012.

B. Resolution No. 2011-20 to purchase golf course equipment and an ice machine.

C. To ratify the property tax increase reflected in the budget.

D. Ordinance No. 2011-08 levying a tax rate of $.31942 for the City of San Saba.

Stan Weik, City Manager, reported on the following:

a. There will be a tour of the renovation of the Wastewater Department.

b. City officials will attend a Hotel/Motel Class on October 13th at Giddings, Texas.

c. After discussion, the Council agreed for the City Manager to pursue options for a neighboring city to purchase non-treated water from the City of San Saba.

d. The Animal Control Supervisor, Scott Meador is working on the problem of rabid and stray (mostly feral cats) animals in the city limits. Two animals have been tested rabid and they are waiting on the report on a racoon that was tested.

Mayor Jordan adjourned the meeting with a short break before an Executive Session.
