Freedom
Thursday, July 3, 2008 • Posted July 3, 2008

This Friday, we celebrate the birth of our country. Every year around this time we seem to get that patriotic feeling. Really, this is a time to remember the freedom we have to enjoy. Some today may think we do not have many freedoms, but compared to other countries, we have the best! How many people have you heard say lately, “I want to leave America and find a better country!”? We have many clamoring to get into America but not many who want to leave.

Many wars have been fought to preserve the freedom we cherish. This means many have died, perhaps some of your relatives and friends, to give us this freedom. Surely, it was a struggle for our founding fathers. I’m glad we take time to celebrate this event.

I am also glad for another kind of freedom. I am happy to celebrate each first day of the week, the resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ. Jesus has freed those who accept Him from the guilt of sin, the consequences of sin and the power of sin. Some other countries have a “dictator” style of ruling over their people. They don’t make the choices, but they are made for them. Jesus gives us the freedom to choose Him or Satan, but will not make us choose one or the other. Jesus said that the truth will make us free in John 8:32. What is truth? As Jesus prayed in the garden to His Father, He said, “Sanctify them through truth, Your word is truth.” John 17:17

As you celebrate this Fourth, ask yourself if you are really free. Not just the freedom of our country, but freedom from the grip of Satan. If not, there is still time to do something about it. Don’t delay! Act today!
