Man killed in motor vehicle accident in San Saba County

On Friday afternoon, September 16, 2011, a man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a motor vehicle when he attempted to cross the highway. Barco Melquicedes, 42, of Mexico, was riding his bike traveling eastbound on the shoulder when, according to witnesses, he made an abrupt turn into oncoming traffic from the shoulder of the road and was struck by a vehicle which was also traveling eastbound.

San Saba EMS, Fire Rescue, Police, Sheriff's Deputies and DPS Troopers responded to the scene to assist with the victim and traffic, which was very heavy at the time.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Lampasas ER, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The accident is still being investigated by the Department of Public Safety Trooper Mark Owens.
