The San Saba Pecan Classic Fall Four Lady Golf Tournament was a huge success with two San Saba teams in the money!
The Sterner team came through once again, winning second in the second flight. This is the three generation team of Dorothy Sterner, her two daughters, Debbie Lee and Kay Barclay, and her granddaughter, Courntey McNeil. They always play good and have their fair share of wins and it is such a joy to see a family playing together and having so much fun.
In the third flight the team of Hattie Rogers, Jo Ann Snow, Priscilla Muse, and Anita Miles won second place and it was a great come back for this team as they didn’t do so well last tournament.
We had a third team of Sandee Hartley, Janet Hoyt, Shirley Hardin, and Becky Hardin and it was unusual for them not to be in the winners circle. They were just two strokes out of the money.
We had a field of 14 teams, 56 ladies from all over central Texas. Tournament attendance is not like it use to be so we were pleased that this many chose to come to the San Saba River Golf Course.
We sincerely missed Bobbie Churchill, who always takes the entry fees and in the past has always played in the tournaments. Bobbie has health issues and is recuperating at home and she is in our prayers.
The tournament was once again sponsored by Mills County State Bank of Goldthwaite, Texas. They have sponsored this tournament for many years and the ladies appreciate this very generous donation that makes it possible for us to have a really great tournament with great prizes. Visors off to Mills County State Bank!
The tournament began with the president, Anita Miles, welcoming the players and then asked for a moment of silence in remembrance of the 9/11 victims and their families and concluded with prayer. Then our ever present golf pro, Keith Harris, gave the rules of the course and called for tee time! Keith is our constant supporter, making up the scoring cards, scoring at the end of play, putting ice and water on the course for the ladies, and just anything we ask him to do. We so appreciate Keith Harris! He’s the best!
Peggy Jones, our newest member, was there to work in the snack bar and did such a good job of welcoming the visiting ladies and serving them peanut butter and crackers, grapes, and ice tea. We are so pleased to have Peggy. She’s a delightful lady and good golfer.
The ladies gave our, as I called her, our personal chef, Betty Ann Johnson, a round of applause for her delicious food. She had chicken salad, corn salad, fruit salad, and homemade bread, with our traditional pecan pies for dessert. Our club is known for our good food and we owe it all to Betty Ann!
It was a successful tournament due to the hard work and cooperation of all the ladies. We are small in numbers but bonded with friendship and eager to do our part for our club.
The regular play day was September 9, 2011, with the Chair for September, Hattie Rogers, calling for a game of points called "Good At Something" where you get a point for being in the fairway, hitting on the green in regulation, and a one putt; but subtracting a point for being in a hazard, a lost ball, or a three putt.
First Place went to Debbie Lee and second to Jo Anne Hardy and they both had 28 putts to split the Putt Pot. There was a tie for third between Janet Hoyt and Sandee Hartley. Debbie had the Low Gross for the day and Sandee Hartley the Low Net. Hattie Rogers and Debbie Lee both scored a birdie. Jo Ann Snow and Peggy Jones also had a fun day in the sun.
Fall is in the air, with football and dove hunting and fresh mornings, so perhaps we will soon tee off at 9:00 like most other clubs in central Texas, in the mean time, I will just keep on griping and also let’s all keep on ‘swinging!’
