Local officers respond to dangerous situation
Thursday, September 15, 2011 • Posted September 15, 2011

On Friday, the 9th at around 4:30 p.m., law enforcement responded to a report of an assault and an individual with a gun.

Sheriff Brown, Deputy John Wilkerson and Texas DPS Trooper Mark Owens responded to the call and upon arriving on the scene were confronted by an adult female with a shotgun who was screaming and out of control and charged at the officers. The female was disarmed without incident and detained for mental evaluation with the abuse of alcohol being a large factor.

Sheriff Brown stated that "this type of law enforcement situation is a nightmare for all law enforcement and is a no win situation. All you can pray for is that first, no one gets hurt and second that you can find some help for the individual involved once the situation is resolved." Brown went on to state that he was very proud of the way his staff had handled the situation from the dispatchers, Brenda Willis and Jeremy Plumley to the officers in the field.

The female suspect was later committed and transported to a mental hospital for evaluation. Sheriff Brown also stated that there is an increasing amount of pressure placed on Sheriff's Offices all across Texas to deal with those with mental illness due to the states cut backs. It is getting harder and harder to find placements in hospitals for those in distress with mental illness and the state is expecting the County Sheriffs to make up the difference by placing these individuals in jail instead os a hospital.

No charges have been filed at this time, and names are not being released due to medical reasons and the ongoing investigation.
