Richland Springs JV loses to Lometa
Thursday, September 8, 2011 • Posted September 8, 2011

The Coyotes JV lost a nail biter to the Divison I Lometa Hornets JV last Thursday night in Lometa. The late awakening Coyotes were down 20-8 with only a few seconds remaining in the 3rd period when Stanley Butler scored to make it 20-14. A few minutes later he scored again to tie the score 20-20 with 7:26 remaining in the game. After yet another defensive stop, and the Coyotes driving to take the lead, the Hornets intercepted an errant Coyotes pass, returning it for a touchdown. Hornets lead 26-20 with 3:01 remaining in the game. The Coyotes went back on the offensive but were stymied at their own 20 yard line and turned the ball over on downs with less than two minutes remaining. The Hornets had to just run the clock out to secure the victory....but with 6 seconds left in the game the Coyotes forced a fumble and had one last breath. Justin Trevino narrowly escapes several tackles and dumps the ball to Storm Teel. Storm heads upfield, only to be trapped by several Hornets...he flips to Stanley Butler before going down and Butler is off to the races, apparently scoring the tying touchdown. The referees, trailing the play, signal no touchdown...out at the one-foot line. Game over. Hornets win 26-20.

Lometa pretty much stuffed the Coyotes offense in the first half, stopping them on fourth down numerous times. In the second half, Stanley Butler, ran the Richland Springs right back into the game. The hard running Butler scored on an interception return and two beautiful runs for touchdowns to account for all of the Coyotes scoring. Storm Teel did a great job as quarterback, handling the tossbacks as well as lead blocking for Trevino and Butler. Chris Munoz and Justin Trevino connected on several pass and run combinations. Jacob Cohn, Jonathan Patino, Corey Turner and Dillon Parker all contributed on offense with solid blocking.

Defensively the Coyotes provided a group effort against the larger Hornet team. Patino, Parker, Munoz, Butler, Teel, Cohn, Trevino and Turner exhibited Coyote pack defensive efforts to shut down the Hornet offense in the second half. Stanley Butler scored on an interception return (pick six !!) and Jacob Cohn had a touchdown saving interception and Justin Trevino recovered the last fumble to give the Coyotes one last shot at the endzone. The Richland Springs JV boys will play Azle Christian Academy at a site to be determined this Thursday. Check with the school for times and location.
