SS City Council hears presentation from newly formed Youth Sports Association

The San Saba City Council held a regular meeting on Tuesday, August 9th, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor, Ken Jordan called the meeting to order, and announced a quorum with all members present. Councilman Shawn Oliver gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Mayor Jordan welcomed everyone to the court, including around 10 Home School children and teachers who were in attendance to observe and learn.

Lio Sanchez was presented the Employee of the Month Award. He has been a City employee for seven years. The Supervisor of the Quarter Award was presented to Farrel Whitley who has worked for the city eleven years. Lio and Farrel were given a $25.00 gift certificate from a local restaurant, a day off with pay, and their names added to the award plaques.

Local businessman, Kevin Shahan, gave a presentation regarding the newly formed San Saba Youth Sports & Recreational Association. The Association has filed with the Secretary of the State of Texas for a 501C tax exempt status and plans to apply for grants to help purchase land, and have facilities for sports and recreation. The City owns land that is among the several sites the Association is considering to be suitable.

LCRA representative, Fran Irwin gave an update on the status of the new park east of town. They plan to have a grand opening the first part of October.

The following agenda items were approved:

1. Minutes from the July 12th and 25th Council meetings.

2. Payment of bills presented to Council.

3. Resolution No. 2011-12 to waive noise ordinance for August 20th at the Pavilion at Mill Pond Park.

4. Resolution No. 2011-13 to waive noise ordinance for September 10th at the Pavilion at Mill Pond Park.

Action was taken on the following items:

A. An Inter-Local Cooperation Agreement between City of San Saba and LCRA for the City to maintain in good condition and operate the new park facilities consistent with LCRA's Land and Water Use Regulations.

B. Increased the rate of $.06 per 1,000 gallons of water for the North San Saba Water Supply Corp.

C. Awarded contract for sludge removal from facultative lagoon at wastewater plant to Durk’s Farm Services, Dublin, TX who was the lowest bidder for the project.

City Manager, Stan Weik, reported on the following:

a. Water usage has increased because of the drought situation in our area.

b. Bids and information for the foundation of the new fire department has been released.

c. The work schedule for city employees has been changed to start at 6:30 a.m. because of the high temperatures.

d. Animal Control Department Supervisor, Scott Meador, reported that some skunks in the area tested positive for rabies.

Electric Department Supervisor, Larry Alderson, reported there is a possibility of a state-wide blackout because of the increased electric usage. Larry advises that the City be alert and ready for a shutdown.

Mayor Jordan adjourned the meeting with a short break before a Budget Workshop for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The departments presenting their budget requests are: Civic Center, General Administration, Municipal Court, Health Services, EDC, Emergncy Management & Debt Service.
