New Student Mentoring Program implemented at SSHS
Thursday, August 4, 2011 • Posted August 4, 2011

Staff at SSHS are proud to announce the implementation of a MENTORING MATTERS program. It is a proven fact that students that have solid adult support consistently do better in school. Mr. Martin wants to provide to his students a mentor that handles a group no more than three students. "Really, just about every student in my building is only one unforeseen castatrophe from really being in lots of need," stated Mr. Martin. "Originally, I had thought of just having my most needy students being paired with an adult mentor. After studying this matter to some degree and visiting with other principals, I have concluded that EACH and EVERY student needs that mentor contact, even if they are a really sharp student.

Each high school teacher will be in the mix, but that number of total staff only totals to 30 or so. For the program to work as needed and meet the student to mentor ratio, we will need between 35 and 40 additional adults to work in the program. You may ask what all will be involved with being a mentor to a SSHS student? I am so glad you asked! It will require 30 minutes one time every three weeks or 1 time per month, during a time slot of about 10:00 until 10:30.

We plan to have various programs throughout the year that highlight solid academics, great behavior, mutual self-respect and self-discipline. On the morning of that particular program, we will then at an extended time during break, talk about these topics and issues that pertain to our students. It is also possible that you will meet with your students at additional times that will be prearranged by you.

Each student will have the chance to PICK their own mentor from a list that will be published about one month before they choose. It is highly likely that you will have a group that will be of different grades as well.

So, with that being said, to show your interest in this program, simply call, 325-372-3786 or e-mail Mr. Martin at wmartin@san-saba.net. Please know as well, state law requires that to work with children, a criminal history check is required, will be reviewed and must meet District policy.

We really need your immediate help and please call today.
