100 Years Ago

July 20, 1911

The county farmers union met with the Live Oak Local last Thursday and Friday. The following officers were elected: W.T. Dowda, president; Joseph Eiler, vice-president; W.C. Biggs, secretary-treasurer; J.E. Johnson, county lecturer.

W.R. Smith, architect, and superintendent of construction for the new school building at Richland Springs, brought down a large ear of corn with him Friday. It was raised on the farm of M.D. Terry. It is on exhibition at the News office and is an illustration of what San Saba county will produce even of a dry year.

Edward Bowman closed a contract with the trustees of the Bethel public school last week and will teach that school this coming year. Miss Tommie Browning will be the assistant in the school.

The new $75,000 courthouse will be completed and formally turned over to the commissioners court, Wednesday, July 26.

July 23, 1942

County, district and state officers are to be elected this Saturday, July 25. The state race is featured by a bitter U.S. Senatorial race between three candidates, W. Lee O'Daniel, James B. Allred and Dan Moody.

Harry Shapiro and his brother, Morris, left Sunday to attend the elaborate style show staged each year in Dallas and to buy a stock of ladies ready-to-wear for the Leader Dry Goods Store.

F.L. Sterner, manager of the Jones Dry Goods Store, also left Sunday to buy a new fall line of merchandise at Dallas. He will be there most of the week.

San Saba county's new agricultural agent, Mr. A.B. Ford, has arrived and is already busily engaged in the duties of his office.

Mrs. Tom Murray Jr. and Pat Murray visited Sunday with Tom Murray, Jr. at Camp Wolters, Mineral Wells.

July 21, 1966 

Don Pallett, local SCC employee, was elected president of San Saba County Young Farmers recently.

A device for tracing nuisance calls in now available for use in the San Saba office.

San Saba's Little League All Star team will participate in the Menard Little League tournament this week. Team members are Billy Smith, Rodney Vogel, Ronald Wood, Ricky Hyatt, Mike Ray, Wayland Moore, Randy Holland, Dan Benson, Richard Jackson, Norris McCarty, Keith Sterner, Henry Harrison and Jessie Childers. Ben Ray will be the team manager.

Officers of the San Saba High School Student Council will attend a Student Council Workshop at Hardin-Simmons, Abilene. Those participating will be: Bobby Rich, president; Dick Miller, vice-president; Marsha Behrens, secretary; and Betty Murray, treasurer.

At the movies: James Garner, Sidney Poitier, "Dual at Diablo."
