Jesus Reyes, 86, of San Saba, Texas, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in San Saba. He was born October 15, 1924 in San Saba County, Texas, the son of Ernesto Reyes, Sr. and Emilia Osua. He and Celia Calderon were married July 15, 1944. They were married for 67 years and made their home and raised their family in San Saba. His background covered a variety of occupations and activities. For many years Jesus drove a truck hauling turkeys and he worked for Leonard Farms for awhile. He and his family would travel to Arizona and Indiana to harvest cotton and tomatoes. He always had a garden and enjoyed sharing with others. Music was a big part of his life, as he and his brothers had a band together and he loved to dance. His family filled a special part in his life. Jesus had a full life and enjoyed his many blessings. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of San Saba. After he retired he enjoyed maintaining the yard for St. Mary’s.
Jesus is survived by his wife Celia Calderon Reyes of San Saba; one son, Alex Reyes of Richland Springs; daughters, Olivia Reyes Valles and Raymond of Lampasas; Olga Reyes Cantu and Tony of San Saba; and Oleta Reyes Behrens and Ernesto Soto of San Saba; brothers, Joe Reyes and Mary of San Saba and Ernesto Reyes, Jr. and Virginia of San Saba; sisters, Maxine Reyes Esquivel and Lorenzo of San Saba, Martha Reyes Gonzales and Marcos of San Saba; Maria Reyes Gonzales and Manuel of Coolidge, Arizona; Leona Reyes Gill of Lampasas; grandchildren, Dora Lee Fernandez, Betty Sue Hardy, Christopher Valles, Cindy Shoch, Phillip Cantu, Anthony Cantu, Kassy Gomez, Crystal McCormick, Aaron Behrens, Justin Reyes, and Jessica Skinner; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Jesus was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Juan Reyes; one sister, Emilia Campos; one son, Jessie Reyes; one grandson, Nicholas Valles; great-granddaughter, Briza Cantu; and daughter-in-law, Leticia Reyes.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 17, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Deacon Richard Menchaca officiating. Interment followed at the San Saba Cemetery. A Rosary was held Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Richard Menchaca officiating.
The family requests that memorials be made to the San Saba Cemetery or to the San Saba County Volunteer EMS.
Pallbearers for the service include Christopher Valles, Anthony Cantu, Phillip Cantu, Aaron Behrens, David McCormick, Justin Reyes, Caleb Skinner, Joe Schoch, Zach Schoch, Zane Schoch, and Damian Gomez. Honorary bearers include Joe Reyes, Ernesto Reyes, Jr., Lorenzo Esquivel, Marcos Gonzales, and Manuel Gonzales.
