James Benjamin Harkey was born on September 16, 1920, to Otis and Mabel Harkey. He passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at the Brownwood Regional Hospital.

James spent most of his life in San Saba except for his time at the University of Texas and in the Navy during WWII. For many years he was a businessman owning a milk and ice distributing business as well as the San Saba locker plant.

During his years as a civic leader, he was active in the Vol. Fire Department, American Legion, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce and City Council. In 1966 he was voted Man of the Year. James loved San Saba and was always eager to serve his community. He was especially proud to have started the Little League program which continues today. Another contribution was being one of three men to initiate the building of the local golf course.

James loved people, never met a stranger and had a phenomenal memory of names and details of San Saba county, even at ninety years of age.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Billy Kirk and Jack and wife Erma.

James is survived by his son Randy and his wife Suzi of San Antonio, his daughter Marsha and her husband Jim of San Saba, five granddaughters and their husbands and eleven great-grandchildren. He was loved dearly by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
