The annual Special Olympic Spring Games were held in Abilene for this region this past Saturday on the campus of Abilene Christian University. San Saba ISD sent 6 athletes, two sponsors and a host of people aas a supporting cast to enjoy the festivities. The traditional opening ceremonies allowed all participants and schools to enter the stadium parade style and the color guard from Dyess Air Force Base made the ceremony official. The event staff also took the opportunity to gather all contestants that had birthdays in May so they caaould have "Happy Birthday" sung to them. Our own Christine Robertson got to participate in this special moment since she has a birthday in May.

The order of events had the boys running and girls throwing events before lunch and switched after lunch, boys throwing and girls running. In all, the San Saba athletes brought home 7 gold medals, 3 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal. The individual breakdown is as follows:

Eric Davila received gold in the softball throw for distance.

Heath Lackey received gold in the 25-meter walk and gold in the softball throw for distance.

Scott Jolly received silver in the 50-meter dash and silver in the softball throw for distance.

Adam Woodard received gold in the 50-meter dash, and gold in the softball throw for distance.

Lane Caldwell received silver in the 50-meter dash and gold in the tennis ball throw for distance.

Christine Robertson received gold in the 50-meter dash and bronze in the softball throw for distance.

School employees who sponsored these athletes were Mrs. Mathis and Mrs. Hewitt. Mrs. Mathis spent months coaching the individuals in their certain events.

Thank you to the parents and guardians who also made the trip to show love and support. Also, thank you to Mrs. Glaze, Mrs. Key, and Mrs. Shackelford for their administrative support as well.
