The San Saba Ladies Golf Association held their annual Spring Pecan Classic Four Lady Tournament on May 14, 2011 with twelve teams of four participating. The tournament was once again sponsored by the City National Bank. The ladies always appreciate this very generous support to the tournament which makes it most successful. A big thanks goes out to the City National Bank!

Upon arriving the ladies were served juices, coffee, and donuts and were presented a small golf caddie for storing golf balls. Throughout the day there were grapes and peanut butter and crackers for snacks, as well as ice tea and water on the course. Nell McHorse very graciously worked in the snack bar. Nell is such a great member. Although she doesn’t play golf any more, she works within the organization and even serves as vice president and is in charge of the yearbook each year and does an excellent job. Nell is a valued member as well as a dear friend! Big thanks to Nell!

The tournament was opened with prayer by the President, Anita Miles, and welcomed to the course. Keith Harris, our pro, gave the rules and then it was tee time! We could not do without Keith. He helps in every way to make our tournament run smoothly. Thanks to Keith for all he does, from scoring to just being a great pro! And Crystal, his wife, certainly does her part.

San Saba had a big winner! The Sterner Girls! This is a team that has participated for years and won their fair share. This year they captured first in the second flight with a blazing 67! We are proud of this team, consisting of Dorothy Sterner (mom and grandma), Debbie Lee and Kay Barclay (daughters of Dorothy) and Courtney McNeil (Dorothy’s granddaughter). How fun is that! A family team that has such a good time as well as always playing good golf!

We had two other teams: Sandee Hartley, Becky Hardin, Shirley Hardin, and Janet Hoyt in the first flight and Hattie Rogers, Jo Ann Snow, Priscilla Muse, and Anita Miles in the second flight. Janet Hoyt gets the ‘good sport’ award as she was at the lake but came in to play with her team after some confusion. Our own Shirley Hardin won closest to the pin on #2. Congratulations to Shirley!

The ladies were served a delicious salad lunch of chicken salad, pasta salad, fruit salad, homemade bread, and the traditional pecan pie. Betty Ann Johnson once again catered the lunch with the help of Jeanean Thornton. These ladies are not only efficient but just plain fun and add to the festivities!

On May 5, 2011 the San Saba Ladies Association held the monthly business meeting. The President, Anita Miles, called the meeting to order and the meeting was opened with prayer by Hattie Rogers and she noted that that day was the world day of prayer. The Secretary, Jo Anne Hardy, read the minutes for the past two months and they were approved as read. The Treasurer, Bobbie Churchill, gave the financial reports. The committees reported on the plans for the upcoming tournament and the ladies voted to participate in the October Music Festival sponsored by the City of San Saba. The meeting adjourned for play day with the Chair for May, Bobbie Churchill, calling for Low Gross and Low Net, with Anita Miles winning the events and Low Net being awarded to Sandee Hartley, who also won the Putt Pot. Hattie Rogers and Anita both chipped in to split the Chip In Pot. Jo Anne Hardy also participated and Becky Hardin attended the business meeting.

The cool scattered showers kept the ladies indoors on May 12, 2011 playing cards until the afternoon and then Hattie Rogers, Jo Ann Snow, and Anita Miles went to the links for a little practice for the tournament. Alas, they needed more practice. But they are not discouraged and only look forward to the Fall Tournament where they will be finely honed and ready for revenge. In the meantime, if the Lord’s willing, they will be ‘swinging!’
