San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month
Thursday, May 19, 2011 • Posted May 19, 2011

The San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month is the residence of Mario and Gloria Mendiola at 810 W. Pecan Street.

The place was once, years ago, home to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Watkins and their children. Mrs. Watkins told Gloria that the Watkins family liked their location near the school campus because their children could walk home daily from school for lunch. On many occasions, Mrs. Watkins said, she served lunch also to extra friends that tagged along! Mr. Watkins was a local barber in town.

Gloria and Mario began working on their yard project about fifteen years ago when they purchased the property and their children were still at home. The couple spends many days mowing and manicuring lawns for local San Saba people and the United Methodist Church, along with their regular jobs. They know how to keep yards neat and thriving!

Gloria says she enjoys keeping different varieties of lilies, salvia, roses, grasses, cannas, shrubs, yucca, and ivy growing in her yard. Pots of flowering plants also adorn the porch. Mario and Gloria added a pond and bird baths to the front yard flower bed to attract song birds. The Garden Club hopes everyone can drive by and see the beautiful "Yard of the Month!"
