The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD met on Monday, May 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President, Darrin Barker, called the meeting to order and established a Quorum with all trustees present. Kevin Shahan gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.
The Principals introduced the Students of the month. They were: High School, Nickie Ortiz; Middle School, Naylei Aguirre; Elementary, Cafeteria ladies: Diane Wood, Flossie Woodward and Teresa Gibson. Programs recognized for outstanding records were the Tennis Team, the Girls Basketball Team, and the Band. Outgoing Board Members Darrin Barker, nine years and Bob Whitten, 12 years, were recognized and appreciated for their many years of service.
Superintendent, Leigh Ann Glaze, gave the following information:
1. The next Board Meeting will be Monday, June 13th at 7 p.m.
2. Board members,Kim Kirk, Marcie Maxcey and County Superintendent Leigh Ann Glaze will canvas the election results at noon on May 17th.
3. Plans for the School Bond, if passed, was distributed.
4. Graduation will be Friday, May 27th and Staff end of school year meeting will be Saturday May 28th starting with breakfast.
5. A 4-day Academy will start Tuesday, May 31st for teachers with Board members invited to attend Friday June 3rd. Trainers and cost is provided from a Grant.
6. The Baseball playoff’s are on Wednesday & Friday this week.
7. There are new dietary guidelines in the cafeteria, mandated by Michelle Obama.
The following Consent Agenda was approved:
A. Regular and executive meeting minutes from April 11th.
B. Amended 2010-2011 budget for ARRA and Vision 2020.
C. Pay bills.
D. Financial report.
E. Accepted donations from San Saba Band Boosters and Techno Mania.
F. Student Transfers for the 2010-2011 School Year.
Assistant Superintendent, Michael Bohensky, reported that the TAKS testing was at the end of April and results should be received by May 25th; retesting will be next week; there will be a team of three for each campus to help teachers implement resources for Cscope.
The Girls Basketball Team was presented a shadow box with memorabilia of the State Game that will be mounted in the foyer at the Armadillo Arena.
Elementary Principal, Kay Shackleford, reported 304 students and 13 Head Start; 95.85% attendance; ESC XV reading specialists assisting reading/ELA teachers; Fitness Gram information gathered by Coach Welch; TAKS testing; working on TPRI and AIMSweb testing; Grandparents Day was May 4th; Special Olympics in Abilene was May 7th with 4 from elementary attending; May 9th - Math, Science, & Art Night; May 10th GT field trip to Air Force Base in San Angelo; May 12th - Kinder field trip to Sweet Berry Farms; May 13 - Water Day; May 14 - Election Day ; May 27th - last day of school and awards presented.
Middle School Principal, Vicki Key, reported 191 students; gave TAKS result percentages for TAKS in Math, Reading and Science; Graduation for 8th grade will be 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 27th; May 9th, 7th & 8th graders - Mill Pond Park for LCRA River Days Program; May 16th, grades 5th & 6th will be at the LCRA River Days Program; all grades will have a swim afternoon the week of May 23rd; OFYP days and summer school need to be scheduled; GT students went to Dallas to the US Mint, Museum of Nature and Science, Medieval Times; MS tennis went to district and played Early.
High School Principal, Woody Martin, reported 198 students and 96.41 attendance rate; highlights have been state tennis, and bunches of others almost making it, softball and baseball playoffs; scheduling and planning for the next year with course offerings and getting end of the year banquets completed. It has been a good one.
Band Director, Brian Sours, gave a San Saba Band spring update on the UIL Concert & Sight Reading; six students are going to Texas State Solo & Ensemble Competition; Band is going to South Padre.
Action was taken on the following Old Business items:
A. The Board approved the Update 89, affecting local policies including implementing some Online Courses.
B. The STAAR starting points policy was tabled because the legislature will determine this policy.
C. The Board approved the 2011-2012 Calendar.
Action was taken on the following New Business items:
a. Reviewed results of School Safety Audit that is mandated every three years at the cost of $3,000.00. The cost was paid for with a grant.
b. Designated Kline & Krauss as Auditor for two more years.
President Barker adjourned the meeting with a short break and then an Executive Session. Cake was served in honor of Board members Whitten and Barker during the short break.
In the Executive Session, the Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Flossie Woodward who will be retiring at the end of the school year,after 20+ years in the cafeteria.
