Thomas Edward Ragsdale, San Saba High School Class of 1955, was born to Eddie and Bertha Ragsdale in 1937 in San Saba, Texas. Edward grew up in San Saba where his father worked as a butcher for many years for Jeff Byrd at Jeff Byrd Grocery. Since Edward was already spending time at the store because of his dad, he began to sweep the floors for $2 a day when he was nine years old. This became the beginning of Edward’s life in the business world.
Edward went on to graduate from San Saba High School in 1955. After high school he joined the National Guard, where he spent seven years in active duty serving his country.
In January 1973, Edward and Pudge Gage bought the grocery store from Jeff Byrd and became partners in G&R Grocery. Edward continued the business after the death of Pudge in 1990. Edward has always taken a part in the ongoing activities in San Saba. He has held several offices with the San Saba County Young Farmers and continues to actively farm and ranch. He also serves as an elder in the 2
Anyone who knows Edward recognizes that he has a special gift of always being there to lend a helping hand to anyone with a special need, whether that need is due to an illness, death, or just a temporary time of need. He always seems to be the first to respond with anything to help a fellow San Saban, without any accolades or rewards for his generosity. He does it all quietly and behind the scenes.
Edward is married to his lifelong mate Linda, who has a real estate business in San Saba. They have two daughters, Christine and Sara, and are proud grandparents of three grandchildren.
Edward receives this year’s Wall of Fame award as a person who has continued to live and work in his hometown. As all will agree, he will do whatever he needs to do for the betterment of the community he loves and continues to call home. Thank-you, Edward, for all you do
