San Saba County EE Clubs to present annual May Event
Thursday, April 28, 2011 • Posted April 28, 2011

The San Saba County Extension Education Clubs will present their annual May Event on May 11, 2011 from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM in the basement of the Methodist Church with door prizes, a silent auction and lunch provided and wish to invite each of you to attend. Please come and participate, because this event is to raise funds to support our 4-H members. They are busy with archery, clothing, foods and nutrition, photography, light rifle and raising animals, and the E.E. clubs donate to support them.

We will have wonderful speakers; Jimma Byrd on birding in San Saba County; Dan Prickly, Senior Staff Archaeologist for LCRA on nature; Kay Stewart on quilting; and our special guest will be Stan Weik, City Manager. We can question Mr. Weik about some of the construction going on in our city or whatever we wish.

Dan Prickly, Program Manager of the LCRA’s Cultural Resources staff, will provide a slide show on historical and archaeological sites that have been discovered within LCRA’s proposed San Saba River Nature Park. The new park, which is slated to open to the public in the Fall of 2011, is located at the confluence of Mill Creek and the San Saba River on the northeast edge of San Saba, Texas. Among the sites that will be described in the presentation are the 1880s era stone wall fragments, sluices, and foundations of other former structures that represent the remains of the City of San Saba’s first waterworks. During the program, the rich American Indian archaeological sites that have been recorded within the park will also be described. In particular, the findings from test excavations of one of these sites will be discussed.

Mr. Prickly is a native Central Texan who has 36 years of experience as a professional archaeologist in Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. He obtained B. A. and M. A. degrees in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to his employment at the LCRA, he worked for the University of North Texas, the Texas Historical Commission, the Texas Water Development Board, and a number of archaeological consulting firms.

We will also have a silent auction of items provided by our members which will include baked goods, plants, baskets of items and various silent auction items. We will also have a Cultural Arts Exhibit of articles made by our members upon which you may vote. The winners of each division will show in District, and if they win there show in State.
